Except I am a moron and the Charleston bridge is a cable-stayed bridge, not a suspension bridge. It still is the longest cable stayed in the US though. Just ignore the parent.
The longest suspension brigde in the US, and what looks to be the thrid longest span in the world (4th if you count this new italian bridge) is currently being built in Charleston, SC. The span will be 1546ft, with the total bridge coming in at about 2.5mi. Check out some info on it here.
I definitely agree with your post. What I find ammusing is this little line from/. reply about why they don't cache...
I could try asking permission, but do you want to wait 6 hours for a cool breaking story while we wait for permission to link someone?
Let me see...wait 6 hours for a "breaking" story, or wait 6 hours (or more) while the server in question gets back on its feet, having to rely on nothing but the article summary on/. which we all know is usually completely blown out of proportion or just plain wrong. Yeah, you're right CmdrTaco, not caching links is better!
No, they probably haven't, because Mozilla is not really supposed to be an end-user browser. It is supposed to be the engine for other end-user browsers. At least, that was its original intent. So leaving the debug stuff in the 1.0 makes sense, since they are always developing and not making a mass consumption product.
Except for me to buy something used, someone at some point had to buy it new. Which means they got their money, just not from you. That may help you sleep at night, but doesn't solve the problem.
I know there are a lot of Flash haters out there, but Hillman Curtis did an absolutely wonderful Flash movie for HP about a year ago. Gives me goose bumps every time I see it. Check it out.
1. FrontPage is not free, but FrontPage Express is. Just like Outlook isn't free, but Outlook Express is.
2. I didn't say anything about web page designers. I said web page developers. You know, people who use php and the like to create dynamic web pages. People who PROGRAM. And besides, everyone thinks its easy to create html pages, and it is. The difficulty is in creating QUALITY web pages.
3.I wasn't knocking Mozilla's quality, I was knocking the attempts to put down IE by glorifying all these features which IE can do as well (minus tabbed browsing). Do you know why I use IE? Because it is the best browser in my opinion. Not because I am too lazy to install Mozilla. I have Mozilla on this machine, along with Netscape 4.x and 6, and Opera. I have that so I can make sure that the pages I develop work across the board. However, I choose to use IE for personal browsing because I feel that it is still the supieror browser. Mozilla is making headway, but it isn't there for me yet.
Next time, don't assume you know my reasons for why I use IE, because you will be wrong.
Yeah, IE has this for a while, OE and FrontPage Express can be downloaded with IE, or they can be skipped. OE is my mail client of choice, with very nice searching and filtering capabilities, and any serious webdev is not going to use something that came with their broswer to create sites.
3) Sidebar
Yeah, and IE has customizeable sidebars as well, including sites like Google (actually a top bar) MSNBC. And I don't want to hear about MS pushing their own news in their own browser, since both Netscape and CNN are owned by AOL Time Warner. I guess its just coincidence that CNN only has a Netscape compatible version of the sidebar.
2) Scripting security customization
This is actually a cool feature that I hope IE will impliment soon. However, third party solutions are available for IE that do the same thing.
1) Tabbed browsing
Now this is about the only thing I wish IE had. XP groups multiple windows, but it sucks. I hope MS adds this soon.
Overall, only two of your items are features that IE can't do, only one of those can't be done at all, and none of them are good enough reasons for me to switch, or recommend anyone else to do the same.
I think it is intersting to note that when they found the bug in the Flash player and contacted Macromedia about it, Macromedia had also recently found it, and immediately fixed the problem with a new version. Say what you will about Flash, but Macromedia is an excellent company when it comes to being accountable to their users.
Except the shape of Mr. Fusion will be decidedly toilet shaped, with a roll on one side and a nice set of magazines on the other. Oh, and don't eat cheese, otherwise you won't be going anywhere for a week (pun intended).
Sony makes some of the best PDA stuff out there. There Clie line blows Palm and Handspring out of the water in my opinion, and this thing looks like it will give the other PDA/Cels a run for their money.
There is going to be more than just pong. There is an article up at CNN about it (which, by the way, I submitted as a story yesterday afternoon, but I digress).
The channel is going to not just show video game play, but also have tips and reviews of games. I get the impression that the shows are going to be like TechTV, but focused completely on video games.
Bzzt.. wrong! nVidia provide binary-only drivers. There are stability issues, and there's no way they're going to be resolved, because no-one's got the source to fix it.
Actually, with Flash's excellent XML support, any competent Flash developer knows how to make a product that is easy to use but also easy to update and modify content-wise.
And as for Flash's scripting language...it's a subset of the same language javascript comes from, so it isn't like you have to learn something new.
Actually, it is named after a mountain somewhere in America. Blackcomb is another MS codename, which is another mountain, I think in Colorado. And XP was Whistler, once again sticking with the mountain theme.
I figured thats how these worked. I used to run a predictive dialer, and I knew there was no way to have it "delete" your number. However, faking a disconnect or a fax machine or something like that will get your number removed very quickly, since the dialer admin should be running all the bad numbers on file against the database when it comes in, if it hasn't been done already.
They aren't going to argue with you. If you ask to be removed, and then they don't, all you have to do is call them and say "Take me off" and it's done. No letter is needed. No proof is required. Ask for a supervisor and say "I asked to be taken off and I wasn't." That's all it takes.
How much money in the form of opportunity cost do you think the city might lose?
Probably about as much as they are charging WB to shut down "the city."
And while we are addressing that, they are not shutting down the entire city, just a section of it.

Yeah, it could be that, or it could be that there is something wrong with the address...like the |SRC-P in the big fat middle of it.

Here is a link to the phone that works.

Ah, now that I found the article on Cnet, it is currently free, but once the full network is up it will cost $20/m.
How exactly does $20/m equal a free network?
PS the link to the article is messed up.
if he was upgrading from something
Of course, if they didn't patch it, everyone would be pissed about that. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.
1. Haven't had one in over 2 years
2. It is rare when I have to reboot. And even when I do, it only takes 20s or so to come back up. Big deal.
3. I don't want to remove the internet browser.
4. The SPs are free. And if you know where to look, major OS upgrades are too.
5. Never needed tech support. Ever.
So does this mean if I download the version for free, they will give me ten bucks?
I know there are a lot of Flash haters out there, but Hillman Curtis did an absolutely wonderful Flash movie for HP about a year ago. Gives me goose bumps every time I see it. Check it out.

Let's work backwards
4) Integrated everything
Yeah, IE has this for a while, OE and FrontPage Express can be downloaded with IE, or they can be skipped. OE is my mail client of choice, with very nice searching and filtering capabilities, and any serious webdev is not going to use something that came with their broswer to create sites.
