  1. Apple left IBM for a reason on Walk-Ins Get 360 In April? · · Score: 1

And processor availability was one of them. I'm sure M$ is making their own shortage, but I can only wonder if it's really a IBM fab capacity issue.

  2. Since When on MMOG Giants Prepare For Battle · · Score: 1

Was Turbine Entertainment a giant in the business.

    Blizzard
    Sony Online Entertainment
    and maybe NCSoft (FFO?)

Would appear to be the giants. Turbine has so far been a one hit wonder with Asheron's Call. Their sequel was choked to death by poor management and marketing forcing it out far too soon. Many gamers have sworn off any future Turbine products and some call into question their ability to successfully market Middle Earth Online with lack of a movie out or a future one in the works as of yet.

If you want to know how the MMO world works Blizzard would be a good place to start. They have so far to my knowledge, taken what they saw as mistakes of other MMO companies and stayed away from them for the most part.

  3. Time to Fork Suse on Suse Linux Founder Exits Novell · · Score: 3, Interesting

Novell promised big things for Suse 10. Claiming it was a Windows Killer. I find it no better or worse than the last version of Suse 9.

What Novell is doing here is creating a platform for Ximian and the only way to get any distro to accept Ximian was to buy Suse. This apparently has proven true with Hubert's comments that Ximian had lots of talented people.

  4. Re:Cause or Risk Factor? (warning pro-smoking) on Safe Cigarettes? · · Score: 1

So when I'm driving down the road and the ass in front of me is smoking I should not drive and maybe roads will go out of business. Once a jerk decided to dump his ashtray going down the highway and I had fresh air on my ac. My Truck was suddenly filled with ashes and I'm having to pull over to get the crap out of my eyes.

I'm sorry but I'd support a national ban on smoking period. They kill themselves with cigarettes then expect taxpayers to pick up the tab when they dont want to die. And if it's not taxes then hospitals are raising rates to cover the jerks they save and dont pay their bills and have to pass it onto those of us who chose to live smoke free lives.

Terrorist blows up a carbomb.. We dont stop driving we get rid of the terrorists. Same applies to smokers. Just stop them from smoking.

  5. Goes to Prove on MMOG Fortunes Rise And Fall · · Score: 2, Interesting

That the MMORPG community by and large is small and the dot com projections for some reason are still being used to base making new games. When WOW dominates the world MMO gaming landscape in subscribers alone, it tells you that there's not enough room for other games. Lately we have seen a trend on pushing out blockbuster games, when in fact, there may only be room for one blockbuster game out there. There are plenty of flourishing niche games such as Asheron's Call and Everquest. Even Rubies of Eventide survived.

SWG on the other hand, has not lived up to expectations in many areas. With no support/enforcement of role playing servers, things have generally degenerated into the basic teen infested l33t first person shooter. Serious players dont want to see someone named ch3wb4c4 running around spouting leet speak.

There is also a disturbing trend to drag the movie gone video game scene into the mix. If SWG is having problems then Middle Earth Online is going to fail miserably, notwhithstanding that Turbine Entertainment is at the helm of that game. They are also not going to make a hit with dungeons and dragons online, since many players have invested hundreds of dollars in the game. Players would be reluctant to let it all gather dust on a shelf and give up on their favorite gathering places.

So far Blizzard has done a great job with few hiccups in World of Warcraft. I would expect them to be the superMMO for at least the next 2 years.

  6. Public Sector Responsible for Retriving Satelites on NASA Scraps Shuttle And Returns to Rockets · · Score: 1

It seems that the idea of bringing satelites down from space have been pushed to the public sector. Not sure if they would develop a shuttle, but a device that can capture and repair satelites in orbit seems more plausable.

I'm sure eventually space elevators would work out and you can ditch rockets alltogether and then maybe the Shuttle would be feasable. Lift it up and it can fly down.

  7. Time for Corporations to Unionize on Music Industry Threatens to Pull Plug on Apple · · Score: 1

The music industry would be singing a new tune if Wal-Mart & Apple said our price or no sales. CD/DVD sales are 1% of Wal-Mart's profits so they could care less, and have already used that stance to gain favorable pricing from labels.

I've been able to buy things on opening day from walmart cheaper than best buy.

  8. First Dump Windows on Creating a Functional Network for a Radio Station? · · Score: 1

If you are thinking it's a good thing to stick with Win98 you're fooling yourself. Eventually you're going to get a virus and it all goes up in smoke from there.

Install Linux (There are some great distro's out there on distrowatch.com that cater to music professionals).

  9. Convert SA Tivo's to MythTV on TiVo User's Fears Explored · · Score: 2, Interesting

This should not be hard. All the hardware is present and you have a instant DVR that can do more than what Tivo did. Maybe even use a usb dvd drive to put movies on dvd and such.

Sadly DirectTivo's probably are out of the picture for this.

Most phones out there now that have mp3 player capability have the same or similar limits on how much music you can store. Many with proprietary services that require you to buy music to put on the phone and some others that require expensive cables to add music.

Apple will not canabalize thier ipod's with a phone that rivals their products. You have to remember they're getting royalties not commission on sales. They may make a few bucks per phone.

    Okay 3 things.

considering point 1 the rokr is actually a good deal since it's with a good service, not proprietary past itunes bought music and has a goo dinterface.

    large game sites use qmail.

Hell hotmail.com uses qmail to send emails. Not sure about the rest of it.

Inter7 can get you setup properly and provide maintenance if you have problems but otherwise their setups are self manageable.

  20. Interesting. on Scientists Speed up Light · · Score: 0

From what I read about physics.

E=MC2 is not a sustainable equation.

You cannot convert mass to energy. Energy has a mass of it's own. protons and neutrons weigh something. Ever hear of a neutron star?

Just like they "Think" the universe will keep expanding.

Space is a vacuum because of gravity pulls all matter into objects wether they be galaxies or individual atoms. Eventually all matter will merge again. Space may be infinite and if so then infinity is a hard number to work with. If one atom still existed on the opposite side of the universe if there is a side then the combined gravity of everything else would eventually pull it towards it.

The singular atom will never have enough energy to overcome the pull of everything else. Of course the time it takes for this to happen could be so long that the atoms that consist of my body could inhibit the suns of a thousand galaxies by the time the reversial started.

It could also be said that by the time all that mass combines and whatever it becomes in that combination then the single atom that exists could be it's antimatter equivalent. Once it hits that entire mass it's another big bang and the cycle begins again.

  25. Personally on NASA's Shuttle Plans · · Score: 1

I agree that this launch method would be quite usable for putting payloads into orbit.

    However.

With this idea it's apparent that the space program is now going in circles. There have not been ANY advancements in propelling craft into space, through space, or anything inbetween.

Better NASA in saving this money put the saved money into getting the smartest brains together until they can figure out gravity. Then once they figure it out explore things such as anti-gravity and now to use it to get large payloads or entire ships into space.
