Hopefully HQF is > than 1000.

  2. funny on When Profiling Goes Wrong · · Score: 2

This shit is going to become so commonplace that just thinking about it is making me laugh aloud. Your TiVo thinks you're gay. I love it.

Then I think about the downside and I get frightened.

Then I forget all about it and am happy again...

  3. Apple's not gonna be happy... on "Longhorn" Alpha Preview · · Score: 2

Well it looks like Microsft suceeded in duplicating the OSX dock. Can't they leave poor Apple alone? Or buy them outright?

  4. Ultramercials on Salon, Nearly No Money and Ultramercials · · Score: 3, Funny

Man, that sounds scary. Like something from Brazil or Blade Runner. Might make your head explode if you watch for thirty seconds or more. I guess that's why Salon limited it to 10 seconds. Too much liability.

  5. For me, it is the games..... on What's Keeping You On Windows? · · Score: 2

I dual boot Linux/Windows 2000 Pro and Windows is only started for games these days. I have finally converted to most of my day to day tasks to Linux apps and am generally happy with them. I think the last time I used a Windows app was about six months ago (Excel?).

I suspect laziness is a big factor, but I think that says more about me than the typical slashdot user.

  7. Responsibility on Carbon Releases in Asia · · Score: 3, Insightful

I think it is about time that the dominant species on this planet (i.e. you and me) start taking some responsibility for climate change.

I believe that the greatest threat to the environment is over-population. While many do not agree with this, I believe that this may be the key to living in a sustainable and habitable planet for the next 10,000 ro 100,000,000 years.

  9. Unconvincing on AdAge Predicts Tivo will Fail · · Score: 5, Insightful

Despite the relatively low market penetration, I am a bit suspicious as to the motives behind this story. Doesn't AdAge have a vested interest in seeing devices such as TiVo fail? This article has a decent analysis of the financial aspect behind the subscription model, but nary a word about the impact on advertisers from the loss of revenue due to skipping commercials? Poor jornalism, this should be filed under op-ed for ad-execs and the major networks.

  10. Never on Microsoft's New Hurdles · · Score: 5, Interesting

Microsoft will never give away the crown jewels to save the application side of the house. It can keep the source closed and fight open source for the next twenty years and make billions at it.

If they were foolish enough to open their Windows source, all the links and hooks for Office would be out for everyone to integrate into Open Office. That would kill their app business within a couple of years.

    No, they will depend on:

    1) DMCA
    2) Palladium
    3) Congressional lobbying
    4) DRM
    5) FUD

    to maintain their lead.

    Just my 2 cents.

  11. Superficial analysis on The Moral Pathology of Vice City · · Score: 3, Insightful

Again this begs the question of causality from video game violence to real life violence. Numerous studies show a correlation but not causality. This is the modern version of D&D causes kids to become interested in the occult and worship Satan that we saw in the '80s.

  12. Wiring closets on The Most Dangerous Server Rooms · · Score: 4, Insightful

As a telecom contractor, I know that wiring closets have the lowest priority in terms of cleanup or the "make-it-look-pretty-the-boss-is-coming" effect. You should see some of the ones from the old Ma Bell days buried deep in the hearts of old office buildings. Yikes!

  14. For the off-the-shelf computer consumer... on IBM PowerPC 970 Architecture · · Score: 5, Interesting

This could help push Apple back to a respectable market share over a couple of years. A *nix box with a decent processor and lots of commercial software? Of course, Apple has proved to be just as fierce in protecting their proprietary code as Microsoft, so I wouldn't expect the price to drop significantly for every million sold. But still, alternatives (especially of this caliber) are good.
