  1. Re:but if you can't.... on How To Avoid Viruses At Windows Install Time? · · Score: 5, Informative

This is a pretty poor Ask Slashdot article, IMHO. Here is how I do it within an hour and have nothing to worry about:

    1. Unplug network cable
    2. Install Windows XP
    3. Upon first boot turn on the Windows Firewall and reconnect network cable
    4. http://www.windowsupdate.com
    5. Wait for patches to download, then remove network cable and reboot after patches have installed
    6. Return to http://www.windowsupdate.com and download the remaining patches
    7. Reboot (no need to unplug network cable this time) and install a Virus Scanner/Firewall Suite.

This takes an hour and isn't rocket science.

Moot, its not really considered professional until you're about 16. Case and point: I started programming simple text adventures when i was 7, animated games when i was 9, and wrote a 3d engine when i was 11. I have written several games with a storyline, multiplayer capabilities, and (at least in my opinion) many intresting twists on gameplay. Before I got my current job I was turned down for a programming position for a graduate student who had no clue what he was doing (but he had a degree and was working towards his masters, so he must be qualified!). After three years at my current job (where programming is not in my job description, but required), I was recently offered a programming position with a well known security company.

I can say I have 10 years of programming experience, but realistically its only 3 (and even then its more like 1.5). I also do not have much team-based programming experience (asides from a failed quake mod). It sucks because I encountered some really interesting and unique obstacles that sometimes took awhile to get by.

And yes, i know people with degrees generally have a better approach to certain problems, but so do people that have been programming for a long time.

More computers have been ordered for the rest of our campus which will undoubtly be doing the same thing. You underestimate the funding of higher education institutions.

At 20 cents per cd, a scratched cdr is a moot point since i can always reburn it from the original or mp3s. I cannot fit a cd changer under my seat and it is a lot more convenient to just flip through a cd book at a red light and swap cds than to run out of my car and change a cd magazine in my trunk. Anyway, that is going offtopic. The point is that quality CD-Rs (not the cheap stuff that peels away after a month) last just as long as "factory made cds".

Ha ha ha, not likely. I no longer carry original cds around because they get scratched way too quickly. When I get a cd it gets ripped to my computer and I make a copy. On average a cd (copied or not) lasts about 10-12 months in my car before it becomes unplayable (this is also partly my fault since I no longer attempt to put cds back into their original sleeve while driving).

When a car leaves the dealership with HID lights, it is aimed and filtered properly so it does not blind other drivers. When a car leaves the dealership and then decides to retrofit HID lights into headlight housings meant for halogen lights, then you have problems. IIRC, the housing internals has to be modified for HID lights.
