Once the once potentially great console starts to gather momentum , gathering the interests of investors, larger game studios and so forth. Once money is on the cards the ideals of a completely open and hackable console will slowly start to become less important.
Somebody has to make money from this and to stand a real chance of success it has to have the backing of major game studios. The console will need some killer apps , maybe even exclusive titles. Without it this will end up just a hackers dream. I imagine the first things that will get ported will be emulators such as Mame, WinUAE etc. In the end it will just be a glorified GP32x / Pandora that plugs into your TV with a few shitty ports of TuxRacer and a ton of casual games like Super Angry Tortoise Catapault Brothers!
Still I would love to be proven wrong and we have a very real competitor to the big boys!

The Raspberry Pi people have made it clear that they want the initial batches of the boards in the hands of developers first and foremost. Guess what ? thats where 90% (i imagine!) of them are ending up at the moment. I have hopes that sort of saturation there will be a substantial amount of software appearing in the coming months. I also imagine that there is a ton of open source education software out there that will not be too much trouble to compile for ARM. There are also distro's like Edubuntu which are prime candidates for porting !
I have a much more optimistic view about things and i really hope this turns out to be a success!
As with any new computer or games console - no point in putting them in the hands of consumers until there is a good software library to boot!
"The bottom line is that the desktop form factor is in rapid decline. Tablets and phones are eating away at them. In addition, most stores do not offer Linux preinstalled. The consumer, a mindless sheep, uses whatever is placed in front of them."
I think this is key... in fact its in exactly these sectors where linux based operating systems are really taking hold - and for this reason i dont care about Linux on the desktop any more. More people are using linux in some form or another than ever before.
But Slashdot is one of the few places I can go on the internet to find comments that are intelligent and well thought out, and where its just as fun reading the comments as the posted article.
Compare the comments on Slashdot to comments on Digg or Youtube for example.
I dont necessarily agree with Google out right. Slashdot is a much valued site for me. The site does have flaws , dont get me wrong! However its the community that makes it a worthwhile and Slashdot has that in droves!
I've not checked out the source yet - but I assume it can be compiled for linux since there was a Doom 3 version. This brings me to another question - Are there any commercial games out there also using the same engine that could now be ported to Linux? Obviously this would involve some work and use of "legally owned" data files etc.
This could be really good news for gaming on alternative platforms
Newell reiterated his concerns about a closed model being the 'wrong philosophical approach' --- I guess that means he doesnt like the idea of this happening any more than i do then...
While Apple can certainly be commended for redefining tablet computing, Id also like to add in another thought for consideration.
Bearing in mind that Microsoft are yet to bring to market a viable tablet / phone OS to compete with iOS would we have seen the explosion of iPad (android) alternatives if it was not for the proliferation of Android?
In short - do we owe some degree of thanks to the (i use the term loosely) openness of Android/Google that so many other manufacturers have been able to so quickly bring healthy competition to the table by leveraging the Android ecosystem?
I think since Samsung just hired Kondik (Cyanogen) - thats a fairly strong indication of their intentions to stay with android for the forseable future.
Unlikely... Far more likely its for its patent portfolio of over 14000 patents. And since Motorola have been in the mobile business for a very long time Ill bet they have a substantial catalogue of patent missiles ready to fire over the fence to anyone who wants a mudslinging match with Google / Android.
This almost certainly a response to the shit flinging against android thats fashionable at the moment.
if i had mod points id mod you up. I dont really give a crap about Apple but your comment was the first thing that came into my mind when i read the parents comment!
I am (unforuntately) a subscriber in North London to Virgin Medias Cable service (over fibre). Considering there inabilty to deliver anywhere near my expectations of 20mb i pay through the roof for. (sometimes its as slow as dialup). I dont hold much hope for them delivering this kind of service.
The trouble right now in the UK is we only have one cable service provider able to deliver very high speeds. Virgin Media basically have a monopoly on Cable. Virgin were brilliant when i lived north of the Midlands but here I could not recommend anyone waste their money on their over priced - under-delivered services.
Some other company really ought to roll out a competing cable network in the UK just to give them some incentive to sort there service out. Sorry Richard Branson but you've really dissappointed me on this occaision

Would this mean it would be much easier for me (from the UK) to leave this screwed up country and move to the states?
