  1. Re:Don't worry about the mirrors on Large Format TV Options? · · Score: 1

That's funny. I'm the exact opposite. 60Hz monitors drive me nuts (and I had to take the GRE on a computer with the monitor refreshing at 60Hz). My DLP doesn't bother me. Maybe a cheaper tv would, but I don't have any real complaints about my 50" Samsung (although better vertical viewing angle would be nice for when I am walking around in the room).

My brother had one of the robots (I think it was called Rob). There were at least two games for it, but I only played Gyromite (the other game that I know of was Stack Up or something like that). You push buttons on your controller and the screen would flash sending a signal telling Rob what to do (open/close his grip, raise/lower the arms, rotate the arms around his body). For gyromite, you had to pick up a gyro from one side of his setup, stick it in the spinner thingy on the other side, and then place the spinning gyro on to one of two pedastals in front of it. There was an aparatus to convert the pressure on the pedastal into a button push on the second game controller. Essentially, you had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get Rob to push either A or B on the second controller. Just playing with the robot was kind of fun, but trying to actually get it to do something useful in the game got old pretty quick. We ended up playing through gyromite with my brother playing normal and me substituing for the robot. Really the most fun thing was skipping the game entirely and just playing with the gyros and the gizmo that made them spin (those gyros would spin for a really long time).

  4. Re:it's a tradeoff on Today's Fastest Retail LCD · · Score: 1

I hadn't notice that the color depth sucked. My first thought was that it probably had crappy resolution, and after looking at the specs, it turned out I was right (1280x1024). Why is it that the standalone LCDs have such bad resolution compared to the laptop screens? I have a 15.5 inch widescreen on my laptop (which I bought over a year and a half ago) that does 1920x1200, but this "high-end" 19 inch screen only does 1280x1024. 1280x1024 isn't even the right aspect ratio for a 4:3 screen (1280x1024 would be 5:4). It sounds like the only thing that is actually good about this screen is the response time.

  5. Re:I don't get it on Get Ready For The 20-inch Laptop · · Score: 1

These aren't the laptops you are looking for. Seriously, these aren't intended to be used for what you want. If you want your laptop primarily as something to use on a plane or train, then clearly you want to go with one of the itty-bitty ones. However for somebody like me, a 20-inch laptop sounds great. My laptop is primarily a desktop replacement that I can use while lounging on the couch. It is also plenty portable enough that I can pack it up to go hang out at the local coffee shop, or take with me when I have to fix somebody else's computer. Size and weight aren't really of concern for me. I wouldn't have any trouble lugging it around either, and I have all of the athletic prowess of your stereotypical geek.

I replayed Final Fantasy 2 about a year ago when I got the Playstation port of it. I agree that is wasn't as good as I remembered it, but to say that Mario RPG was in any way better than it is utter lunacy. Mario RPG had all of the quality and depth of one of those movies with child heroes fighting bumbling adult baddies. It might be an okay starter for getting young kid into RPGs, but in terms of being a good RPG, it lags behind even Final Fantasy 1.

I'll agree that some of the earlier ones required too much time leveling up, but I don't remember having to deal with that for FF9 or FFX. I think when I played through FFX, it seemed to be about perfectly paced so that by the time I got to some point, I was ready to handle it without leveling up. On the other hand, the long drawn out intros seem to be getting longer. I think I must have "played" almost an hour into FF9 before I really felt like I was in control and that the game wasn't going to take over again.

They do release drivers, but they really suck. Performance is supposed to be below Windows performance (I don't know first hand since I don't have windows on a machine with an ATI card). Cards supported seems to be improving, but for a while they totally refused to support any of the mobility chipsets. We had to wait months in order to get a set of drivers for Xorg 6.8 that wouldn't crash when trying to use opengl. I have heard that there are lots of features that are currently not supported, but I haven't actually checked these claims (they aren't features that currently interest me). If my ATI card was in anuthing other than a laptop, I would have ripped it out and replaced it a long time ago (and I am kicking myself for not paying enough attention while ordering my laptop).
