  1. When CD-ROM drives were brand new... on Online Porn - The Technology Testbed? · · Score: 1

I remember looking at the CD-ROM software section at Fry's and seeing one half of a row with encyclopedias, crappy cinematic games, almanacs and the like, and the rest of the space devoted to "adult content." It was like a 100:1 ratio. And now we all have CD drives. :-)

  2. Warning for PowerVCR users on Latest SnapStream PVR App Reviewed · · Score: 1

I was using Cyberlink PowerVCR II for a while, as it came with my capture card... I had tried demos of Snapstream PVS in the past, and decided to have a look at BeyondTV...

It worked so-so with my capture card, but I wasn't too impressed with how it did MPEG formats. I decided to uninstall. From then onward, PowerVCR never worked again... it would begin a recording and freeze the entire machine within a minute. I've yet to bother re-imaging the machine, and just switched to WinDVR instead.

BeyondTV is the most polished PVR windows product I've seen, but something about it or its leftovers was dirty and didn't play well with PowerVCR. YMMV.

  8. Consider this before jamming... on Cell-Phone Wars · · Score: 4, Insightful

... Yes, there are annoying people who speak very loudly on their cell-phones in restaurants and the like. There are people who answer them in theaters, classes and other "non-talking" environments. There are people who talk on the phone (or to passengers) while driving, and give their talking process a higher attention priority than the driving process.

However, these are the ones that get noticed. The ones who speak quietly while dining alone in a restaurant or on the subway; the ones who speak on a phone or to other passengers safely while driving; the ones who set the phone to vibe and then surreptitiosly look at the caller ID during a film, class, meeting, etc... these people are not noticed and probably outnumber the annoying ones by far.

If you jam cellular frequencies, not only are you screwing with all the safety devices already mentioned, but you're screwing with people who are behaving politely and reasonably.

Would you start spraying febreeze at everyone entering a store because occaisonal patrons come in without having bathed recently? It might help with them, while pissing off people who do behave properly. Jamming makes You the nuisance who should be removed.

Although they too have slowed down on new feature development, they're still way ahead of any other portal I've seen.

If the legal avenue is too far corrupt to smack them down for this, how about press? I'd love to see this make national TV news, headlines in papers, interviews with the victims, etc...

  16. Re:maybe im missing something... on The State of Automated Commercial Skipping · · Score: 1

    (1) the commercials are not integrated with the rest of the site (they change by user) and therefore they are not a coherent copyrighted work like a TV broadcast, and (2) pop-up blockers have a substantial non-infringing use because they prevent people from falling into pop-up traps, which are obviously very bad.

    Here's a couple off-the-cuff counters:
    (1) Often the TV commercials aren't integrated in that, if you've ever watched TV from a Big Ugly Dish, the show goes to black for a while so that local stations can insert commercials (which then vary by region, like by user with pop-ups). Further, it's a string of copyrighted works played consecutively, not one coherent work. The owners of the show's copyright aren't necessarily even the owners of each commercial's copyright

(2)If you're trying to watch TV quietly (i.e. just loud enough to understand dialog), commercials are often louder and can wake sleeping family members, etc... that can be considered as abusive as pop-up traps.

is that people aren't encouraged to use critical thinking skills. As children, asking why too many times or spotting inconsistencies in explainations is often frowned upon. As adults, questioning your employer is an example of not "being a team player," while questioning your government is "unpatriotic." At any time, questioning an organized religion is usually branded "heretical."

I've compared Super Mario Brothers 2 on my Zaurus under ZFCEU to a friend's GBA running the same game, and the GBA just plays better. Even though the buttons are similar in placement and number, they just weren't well engineered for gaming.

As for Doom, congratulations! I use it to show off the Zaurus processing and graphics abilities, but never bothered playing much due to a lack of buttons to assign for strafe, etc... What did you do in the keymapping to make it playable with one hand?

Of course, others have noted similar problems on other PDAs, and there exist gamepad clip-ons for iPaqs now.
