I could lay on some positive moderation, but I thought this would be the perfect place to mention Henrik Ibsen's play "The Doll's House." In it, he critiques the roles that both men and women play in society. Sadly, he wrote this play over a century ago, and society still forces each person into a set role that was defined a long time ago.

OK, you're trolling, but I'm going to bite.

Your rule is absolute, utter crap. I hardly thing that Krazy Kat is funny, or that Maus should be funny. One Over Zero, for the digital world, had a few chuckles now and then, but I didn't read it daily because I loved how utterly hilarious it was. Comics can be more important than a laugh. Krazy Kat was a poetic comic, and is widely regarded as the best newspaper strip of the 20th century. Maus told the story of the Holocaust in way that was both accessable and mature. One Over Zero had a very enjoyable take on religion.

Being funny is hardly an all-encompassing goal, and what you might find stale others will enjoy immensely. If you don't like it, don't read it.

#8: Alabama Changes the Value of Pi
The April 1998 issue of the New Mexicans for Science and Reason newsletter contained an article claiming that the Alabama state legislature had voted to change the value of the mathematical constant pi from 3.14159 to the 'Biblical value' of 3.0. Before long the article had made its way onto the internet, and then it rapidly made its way around the world, forwarded by people in their email. It only became apparent how far the article had spread when the Alabama legislature began receiving hundreds of calls from people protesting the legislation. The original article, which was intended as a parody of legislative attempts to circumscribe the teaching of evolution, was written by a physicist named Mark Boslough.

Funny, but came very close to happening. In fact, in my great state of Indiana, the House actually passed legislation to set pi equal to 3 by a vote of 67-0. Fortunately, it was shot down in the Senate.

As one of the members of the younger crowd of which you speak, I'd like to express my own (personal) opinion.

I'm certainly curious, and the multiple articles about home-made tools for dabbling with electronics certainly contribute to my curiosity. The problem, however, is two-fold. One, some of this is rather daunting for most beginners. I see some of the talk about people on here building their own circuitboards and such, and I'm a little intimidated, frankly. Two, I wouldn't know why to dabble in electronics, and the lack of an interesting and simple project just means that I won't get the basics that would let me move on to more advanced projects.

www.nutsandvolts.com certainly looks like an interesting resource, but I'm not sure it's as good for complete newbies such as myself. I'm going to sign up for a sample issue to better evaluate it, but I'm still afraid I'll miss a lot of critical background information.

It's nice to see a fellow Hoosier on /., and since I'm in a good mood I think I'll actually post something.

Not only can you get a job at McDonalds for $8/hour, other places are paying a similar amount, even after some major cutbacks. Our local workers at Krogers staged a demonstration on Monday to protest cutbacks in benefits. Not benefits for managers or those with significant education, but those that have been working as a cashier/bagger/whatever for 5+ years. This makes it harder to support a family (although here in New Castle, most everything is cheap because most everything is worthless), but when I hear of protests like this, compared to the plight of those who have gone to college and worked in an upper-level career, I do get somewhat despondant.

Also, I want to disagree with you about trickle-down economics. They do work, but they're slow and extremely ineffecient. A lot of the sustained growth in the mid-90's can be traced back to Reaganomics, because the people at the top keep a cut and slowly reinvest the rest to expand their business and get more money. Unfortunately, the debt load we gave ourself in the 80's doesn't justify the use of trickle-down economics.

Nothing important to say, I just was suddenly verbose because I saw another Hoosier on here.

Would this be the same Sony that is making profits off of it's gaming division and using some of that money to support the RIAA and copy-protection schemes?

Or the same Nintendo that has been accused and convicted of price-fixing, something that has yet to happen to Microsoft (although they sorely deserve to have that charged against them)?

Not all corporations are perfect. For my money, I'd rather buy a GameCube or an X-Box rather than a PS2. Microsoft is certainly evil, but when I think of Sony's actions to destroy fair use for the next 40-50 years, I would never purchase any Sony product. Ever.

Your rant is crafted in a way that oozes FUD, even though it does have some valid points (and others not so valid). Presenting the facts and letting people decide which company is better is usually a better alternative than having an accepted list of companies for people to choose from.

There was an old government known as the Articles of Confederation. While it differed in detail from your proposal, the fundamental aspect of having power from the bottom up was also used for their system. The individual states mandated a policy that the collective nation would then adhere to.

Then came the Whiskey Rebellion. Not only did the individual states disagree on what to do, there were problems getting enough troops to quell the rebellion. With no guiding force from the top down, there could be no cohesion as a whole, which is an important aspect of a collective world government as I understand it.

The men who first drew up the plan of a bottom-up government realized that it was ineffective and unstable, and quickly scrapped the old nation for the United States of America.

My history lesson for the day.

Luckily here in central Indiana we have a few radio stations left like that. Unfortunately, Clear Channel got the biggest fish in the water, and doesn't seem to worry about the others much.

Q95 used to be the best rock radio station in the country. They have all kinds of awards from back in the glory days because of a great format, funny morning show hosts (Bob and Tom, who were funny back then), a local focus, and a dedication not to screw over their listeners. Well, they started slipping once Bob and Tom got syndicated. "It's ok, though, they still are pretty funny, even if they aren't really local anymore, and there are the 20 hours of the day when they aren't on nationwide."

Clear Channel killed those other 20 hours. No one really listens to them anymore, because it's a waste of time. No longer are they the best radio station in the country, they're as bad as most of the other Clear Channel stations.

Just wanted to share my local tragedy.
