Cell's APU(SPU)s are all identical, so it's different from what Anand says. Cell's PU is different, but it only controls APUs, so don't confuse them like sharing different work between them.
Have you ever heard 'public key cryptosystem'? Sony has a private/public keypair and signs a firmware with its private key. Then PSP checks the validity of the firmware by checking it with the public key of Sony.

Yeah, riiiiight...
The fact of the matter is, this is just going to be a shrunk SNES with a tiny screen, modest battery life and a library of titles that already exist for that "other" SNES you already have sitting in front of your TV.
The original Japanese interview on which this story is based on is here. It has a sequel at here.
But I found interesting is, there's difinitely some unfortunate mistranslation of those US/UK media (Gamespot, Gamesindustry.biz) that jumped on this 'confirmation' like some brainless Nintendo fanboys.
This is the literal translation of the original article (You can't find what Kawanishi stated directly, but a summary by the interviewer).
"For the release date (of PSP), he said, while it depends on negotiation with software makers, it's sure thing that (Sony) will release it (PSP) in this year." So what matters is not when it will be released, but when in this year it'll be released.
It's as if those news websites mistranslated it like "for the release date (of PSP), he said, while it's sure thing that (Sony) can release it (PSP) in this year, it depends on negotiation with software makers", but it's not the case, for even the caption of this paragraph is "The release is in this year with a reasonable price". It's an impossible speculation job to connect it with delay when even the original interviewer doesn't.
Since Kawanishi is the head of developers at Network Systems Division and not a high exec like CTO/CEO or whatever who can announce the exact date, he made it vague relating it with software schedule. But he confirmed the release in 2004, not delay.
>given Sony's past successes with underhanded >"why buy that piece of crap now when our >system will be coming out in six months and it >will be ten times as powerfull as their stuff >and it will grant you the magic ability to fly >as well" marketing schemes
IIRC the Xbox PR guy said the same kind of propaganda about Xbox that it can pump out so much more polygons than PS2 before its release, but miserably failed to deliver in the actual sales figures. Yes, the guy cited "Toy Story" hype as if it's some official word from Sony (that is not true), and said Xbox could do more than Toy Story. What's the difference?:)

China is a communism country, not 'Taonist'. Do you know what Karl Marx said about religion? The US is just so much backward as to adhere to specific religious values.
in high-performance processor market is, IBM. Currently its PowerPC chips power Macintosh PC and Nintendo console. In Xbox 2 console, IBM succeeded Intel's deal with Microsoft for Xbox. IBM's Power architecture is going to be embedded in massive volume for both Nintendo and Microsoft consoles. Then, another architecture developed with Sony and Toshiba, STI's Cell will power PS3 console and other servers/workstations. IBM fabs will help production of AMD processors in forthcoming generations, too.
Why do you guys ride on such a big FUD issued by those clueless 'analysts'? RTFA, nothing is confirmed at all. Only 2 firms sent clueless words to get attention. If it's Linux related, you'll run to guess who funds those firms, but browsing posts above ecstatic fanbois quickly filled there apparently.

If MS just a bit disclose the hidden places of OS to the very owners of OS/PC, spyware will be immediately found and killed. Just make those HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run keys and other obscure parts more open and clear to users. Make non-technologically-competitive pieces of OS components open source. Don't lie to your own consumers.
>This might draw some resources away from the PS3.
What resources? I can't understand what you mean. For financial merit to have PSP alongside PS line is, you can hedge the resources between multiple platforms to reduce the entire risk, as with Nintendo case. Until now, SCE has relied on the sole PlayStation platform, but it has PS/PSX/PSP lines. Next, for technical merit, as SCE has its own fabs to produce chips (unlike other fabless Nintendo/Microsoft that rely on NEC/TSMC), you can share those fabs among platforms. Now the new PS2 and PSP share 90nm lines of SCE fabs. It fills all the lines and Sony can speed up depreciation of fabs.
>the DS could actually suceed in the > handheld/console connectivity segment that >the GBA, let be honest, failed in
IMHO Nintendo just gave up the idea to link up different things. You know, requiring 2 things to link them up looks like tie-in sale to be frowned upon usually. Therefore they linked DSs.
>it could be what spurs those DS owners to >choose the next GC over the Xbox2.
Nintendo fans who own DS buy Nintendo console where you can see Mario/Zelda/Pokemon, anyway. It won't help increasing sales much.
>Sony's "NW-HD2" music player only accepts >their proprietary ATRAC* audio format. What >about all my mp3's?
Huh? It transparently converts mp3 to ATRAC3+ in import process, so average consumer only notices that it takes a bit long time to import mp3 tracks in their walkman. In other words, it can 'play' mp3, but not natively, from the beginning of the release of the product.

Aren't they called 'CPU' and 'GPU'?

Do you know what the name this handheld is?
Where did you get NDS has 11 hours of battery life? Last I see some info it was 6-8 or somewhere.
I have forseen it: you've never played the games by SOE :)
Is there any review on it? Is it fun or not?

Better to correct it to "in the history of Xbox".
It's just PearPC PowerPC Architecture Emulator installed on Xbox and it's painfully-as-hell slow atm, and especially on Xbox. Nothing to see, move on.

Cool'n'Quiet, baby.
Thieves, thieves, thieves!
The best E-bike, IMO.

Well...
Optical disc is CHEAP. Are you too young to remember N64 (ROM) vs. PS (CD)?

The upcoming gaming handheld, PSP supports MP3.
Zonk is at it again! He did it on PSP price story that turned out as a hoax shortly after!
Why automatically "external source" = Nintendo? I posted a reply above without RTFA, am now very regretful that I didn't check it by myself first.
