  3. Establishment Thinking v. Invisible Hand on Bell Canada Wants Pirate Websites Blocked For Canadians (www.cbc.ca) · · Score: 1

Canadians have few options for TV. It's basically Bell, or one cable company (the 3 big cable companies have carved up each city, so they don't compete against the other)

With high prices, limited selection of channels, and ongoing high rental fees for boxes (required for each TV in the house) it's not surprising that Canadians are pirate-friendly.

Netflix has proven that customers are willing to pay for content when the price is right.

Pirating and cord-cutting should be the canary/coalmine to Bell that they need to adapt, but instead, they continue to ignore the silent protests of their customers.

And how far will Bell go? Last year, the Bell president snitched on his own daughter for using a VPN

Maybe it's because I'm a fast reader, or I can skim for certain words.

This is a common habit for on-screen consumption of information. Few "read" a website, most scan/skim for headings, and read the first 5-6 words of the paragraph to determine if the information they are looking for might be in that area.

Videos break how users regularly interact with finding information online/onscreen, and it slows down their ability to complete their task (find the information they want), which is why this practice is found annoying.

  12. I've had an RFID implant chip in my hand for 4 years now, and love it.

The doors on my house and garage door opener are all controlled by RFID, as are the doors and trunk on my vehicles. (I'm currently working on installing RFID locks/servos on the glove boxes and center console compartments)

Beyond never getting locked out, it's just incredibly convenient, such as when I'm outside doing yard work, and need something from my garage, I don't have to enter my house, take off the dirty shoes/gloves, to open the garage to grab a shovel. Just wave the hand and the garage opens.

I also hooked up my house safe to work on RFID. That was a fun conversation with my executor. "In the event of my death, you'll need to ask the mortician to dig the chip out of my hand, to open my safe."

I realize it's not for everyone, but it has been wonderful, and I haven't regretted it. I have no desire to take over the world, or enslave the population and force chips to be implanted in everyone. I did ask my employer to register my chip's ID in their security system so I didn't need to wear their RFID badge, but they declined.

I bought several Insteon SmartHome devices totalling well over $1000 -- light switches, i/o lincs, power outlets -- about 6 years ago to wire my house.

All of them have stopped working -- conveniently, after their warranty (some only 2-3 months after).

Insteon refused to refund/replace any of them, despite several emails/videos showing them how many stopped working.

Creating a "Smart" home is already pretty expensive, but even more-so if (WHEN) the devices break every few years.

  21. I love mine! on Companies Start Implanting Microchips Into Workers' Bodies (latimes.com) · · Score: 1

I had a RFID chip implanted in my hand 3 years ago, just for self-interest. ( I have no desire to enslave the human population in end-times )

It was inserted by a friend who's a registered nurse, with some Lanacane. (highly recommend the Lanacane!)

I chose my non-dominant hand in case something went horribly wrong, but there haven't been any complications.

It is very convenient and I use it daily. My house door locks, garage door opener, car door locks and safe are all accessible by a swipe of my hand, as well as a rfid reader by my bed that turns off all my house lights and lowers the house temperature for overnight.

I can understand the concerns people have about implanting chips - chipped bracelets/rings could all do the same thing and I haven't been able to convince my girlfriend to get one implanted yet -- but I just love the convenience of always having it with me.

Sadly, my workplace won't let me use my chip with their swipe access system. Which would have been super handy today, since I forgot my ID card, and had to walk around to the front entrance in the pouring rain.

  22. Restructure gone wrong on Ask Slashdot: What Is Your Horrible IT Boss Story? · · Score: 4, Insightful

One morning, we were all called into the boardroom. The I.T. director started by saying that the division was being re-organized and everyone in the room still had a job.

He then put up the new org. chart, with our new job titles, and reporting structures.

Some managers were demoted to frontline positions, without any prior private conversation with that manager.

And, one guy's name wasn't on the org. chart. My director forgot to pull him out before the meeting. So, turned out, everyone in the room did NOT have a job. And that guy went from "Whew, I still have a job" to "you're fired" in a very public way.

5 months later, the I.T. director was fired after the re-org proved to be a disaster.
