  3. Re:I don't get it on Hot Or Not — 3D TV · · Score: 1

I totally agree. An effect (3D, CGI, Sound, Stage Magic), when done well, is not even recognized. We are so used to "gimmick 3D".

The key to 3DTV is going to be CONTENT. Whoever invents the "killer app", they'll be rich.

  4. Re:Wait... is this an even or odd number Trek? on First Official Photos From New Star Trek Movie · · Score: 1

    Nice.

As far as canon, I understand they will be "breaking the timeline", so that all the other series' inconsistencies, will actually work. I guess it is like having your broken arm, re-broken to heal correctly.

  5. Love Those SIGGRAPH Presentations on Some Eye-Popping Research From Siggraph · · Score: 1

These imaging innovations ROCK. The technology presented on these tools, will be available in commercial apps in only a few years. Damn!

  10. 3D Presentation on Architect Claims to Solve Pyramid Secret · · Score: 1

Nicely done narration of the process. The 3D technique allowed some exploration for the viewer. A passive video would not have been as effective for this.

Took a bit to accept the virtual scientist, but it worked.

    I love the WWN!

Great value for the $. Read it, put it away and pull it out when you are board. It is still just as true and just as entertaining as the day you bought it. Few magazines have this staying power.

  13. WETA is this Decade's ILM on Narnia to be Created in New Zealand · · Score: 5, Insightful

They have the torch. ILM was real good at envirnments, hardware, and explosions. WETA seems to bias in the direction of organics. Nifty turn of style and public taste.

  14. Open Box on Finding Holiday Discounts on iPods? · · Score: 2, Informative

I got $40 discount for buying an "Open Box" iPod at Best Buy. Someone had returned it, nothing missing. I had to reformat the drive, but big whoop.

The Apple warrenty and extended Best Buy warrenty covers everything.

Apple only "discounts" hardware after the technology is unsupported/dead. This was my best option.

Consider it, I am very happy.

  15. Geek = Geek on Sci-Fi Memorabilia To Ogle And / Or Buy · · Score: 1

I'm a Sci-Fi film-aholic and some of these items are just WAY TOO KEWL. Talk about conversation pieces. Yes they are pricey, but hey, how many relics of these films exist anymore. Some collectors get ahold of them, but lots of studios dump or canibalize them for other projects.

I'll bet the story would get fewer laughs if they were auctioning an original cog from the Difference Engine.

  16. Fireworks PNG is not "real" PNG on What Is The Future of PNG? · · Score: 1

Macromedia bastardized the PNG format for Fireworks. The PNG spec does not support layers, effects, type, and vector data (but that is what Fireworks thinks). I wish they had come up with extension like .FWK or something.

  17. Re:Ripping off JMS *again*? on Enterprise Getting New Aliens, Hairdos, Weapons · · Score: 1

I had heard that when MJS was going around hollywood trying to sell the idea of B5, one of the places he went to was Paramount. He was told that the only ones doing SF television was Star Trek. Ke went to the ST office and made the pitch. They said "no thanks, we are doing Star Trek", so he left.

Just after Roddenberry died, DS9 was announced. The premise parallels were sooo close to B5. The B5 pilot was produced before DS9's, but aired after.

    Coincidence? I think not.

In my opinion, B5's story arc was so refreshing that I have a hard time watching ST's "we've saved the universe again in the last five minutes" plots.

One of the reasons we got to the Moon was a bunch of model rocket enthusiasts! If we outlaw or strongly regulate rocketry, we are depriving our species of potential to get off the planet.

Yes rockets can carry "weapons of mass destruction", but so can beakers and universities. <sarcasm>Will we be banning them too?</sarcasm>

    Scarey tactics.
