  11. Of course that's not the problem... on Using GPS to Hail Cabs · · Score: 5, Interesting

Of course that's not the real problem. At least here in DC, I play a constant game of hopping in and out of cabs until I find a driver willing to take me to my neighborhood. It's not tough at all to hail a cab while you're downtown, the problem is finding a driver who is willing to take you to a neighborhood that he considers dangerous (or at least unlikely to result in a return fare). You can get that cab downtown/in the tourist areas real easy - but just watch how fast he'll work to get you out of his cab if it turns out he doesn't want to drive where you've asked him to take you. What we could really use is a system that not only tells a driver where you are but lets him know in advance where you'd like to go. Then I wouldn't have to spend a half-hour boucing in and out of cabs until I find a driver willing to take me home.

  13. Silly Campus Tech dept. on Ten Years of Web Browsing · · Score: 3, Interesting

I was a Sophmore at American University in DC when Mosaic was announced. I remember going to the main computer center on campus and inquiring about this 'web browser' program and if they'd let me load it on a machine there, since the 386sx in my dorm wasn't going to cut it (or, failing that, if they'd load it themselves). Having been shuffled from person to person, I finally ended up with the lab manager who stated "Why would you want to do that? You can get everything you would want off of UseNet. We can't have students loading every flash-in-the-pan technology on these machines."

Fine, he was rather right - there wasn't going to be much to do with Mosaic and I *did* get most things from usenet. But I would just love to go back and ask him today if he still considers web browsers a 'flash-in-the-pan'.

The Pentagon wasn't hit until a little after 9:30 (as I and everyone else in DC would tell you). I know that you updated the story and changed the headline when it occured, but clearly at 9:12 last year folks in DC were still in shock from the acts in NY and very few of us realized that we'd be evacuating our city and streaming over our bridges on foot like our friends in NY.

  19. Rendition? Sure I remember... on 7 Years of 3D Graphics · · Score: 2, Insightful

The Rendition cards, like most cards, were quite good presuming that the folks coding the games knew how to utilize the power of the card. My personal favorite game (Grand Prix Legends) is a little over 3 years old but was written specifically for Rendition cards and Voodoo2 cards - OpenGL support was tacked-on later. And of the three, there was no doubt that Rendition was the best for that game. Nothing inherantly wrong with the cards, imo, but they just got done in by the Voodoo cards of the time (which, of course, got done in themselves not much later).

Anyway, thanks for asking if I remembered Rendition!

I don't have a representative, senator or anyone else in congress and I can assure you that reps from other districts only care about feedback from their constituants. So when I want to voice my opposition to SSSCA I should...? What?

Just another case of me not being allowed to participate in the democratic process.... Taxation without representation is alive and well in our nation's capital.

Ahem. Sorry 'bout that. I just needed to vent for a moment there.

  21. Re:Something terribly amiss in the DoJ on Microsoft, Feds Revise Settlement Agreement · · Score: 1

I don't think that DOJ ever 'threw out some of the comments.' What they decided to do was to categorize the comments they received for the ease of the judge to review. In other words, they had paralegals label some as 'redundant' or otherwise, but nothing got thrown out. The judge will have access to all the comments that were submitted during the public comments period.

Meanwhile, DOJ announced here that all comments will be published on the DOJ website and also "the availability to the public, at no charge, of CD-ROMs containing all of the comments." So, nothing was thrown out...

DOJ is planning on publishing (on the web/cd/federal register/whatever) the ENTIRE e-mail that they received from people commenting on the case. This means that along with your comment, your e-mail address will be available to anyone who chooses to sort through whatever DOJ ends up releasing. It isn't too much of a stretch to then think of people who decide it's a good idea to send an e-mail to all the folks who spoke against MS or for MS, promoting whatever their cause is.

I won't even think about the poor fools who thought it would be a good idea to include home addresses, phone numbers and other personal information in their signature.

I'm quite sure, though, that the media outlets will pour over these addresses to look for trends like what they did with the screwed up ballots in Florida after the last election....

Personally, I'm just glad that I used an account I barely ever use when I submitted my comment - no need having my work e-mail address published by DOJ!

Okay, you don't have to like this type of advertisement and there can be thoughts about the 'psudo journalism' feel of it, but as long as it says that it's an add, how is it any different from the "Special Advertisement Section" that shows up periodically in Newsweek, Discover, Sports Illustrated, etc.? 25. Games vs. Simulations on Physics For Game Developers · · Score: 5, Interesting

I don't know that I really agree with the idea that physics need to be wildly realistic in the 'games' that I play. Honestly, I don't want to know what kind of recoil the rocket launcher in Half-Life would inflict on my character. I'm happier just watching the rocket track nice and straight towards my target instead of attempting to pick myself up off of the ground where I slid to a stop from the highly realistic recoil.

On the other hand, when I play a 'simulation' the physics are quite important. The best physics I've found in a sim are in a 3-year-old game: Grand Prix Legends. You're racing 1967-era Formula One cars, which means skinny tires, no downforce, high powered...which is a combination for difficult driving. But the physics engine is spectacular: you touch the gas when in neutral, you can feel the torque twist the body of the car; each wheel has its own model; touch the gas a bit to hard in a corner and be prepared to swap ends of the car, etc., etc.

The graphics are what you'd expect for a 3 year old game, but a dedicated community has sprung up to support the sim with everything from replay analysers, new tracks and graphics, and even a movie maker!

It seems that if you make a sim with good enough physics behind it, the fans of it can create new 'eye candy' to keep the sim looking good. But if you have crappy gameplay (see: Andretti Racing) and good graphics, the game will quickly be relegated to the bargin bin when something prettier comes along.
