  1. Good progaganda balances out the bad on Windows Tech Writer Looks at Linux · · Score: 3, Interesting

I know people may see this as "Propaganda", but considering the foothold Microsoft has on the industry, I think it's good to find more positive news relating to Linux. I find microsofts ad campain to be very propagandic. It's good to see some counter balance.

This story reminds me of my own conversion. It wasn't that long ago (This January) that I switched over to Linux completely. I was quite impressed with all the applications and how well they worked. I have always been a fan of GNU tools. It's nice to have both without dual booting.

I hardly think that just because you download some mp3s and some warez that are likely involved in credit card sharing. Again, someone is making a generalization.

Pirates are people who distribute unlicenced software or media. That do not neccissarily have exclusive access to anyone's PCs but their own.

I have no doubt whatsoever that it is rife with those for whom piracy is but one of their criminal pursuits, so I'm sure your cr4ckz/pir8z full machine has been owned and used for credit card sharing, kiddy porn propagation, etc. "But I run my pirate copy of McAfee!" you proclaim...bwahahahahahahahaahahahahaha.

How is this insightful? How can you associate piracy with credit card sharing and kiddy porn? This isn't even a blatant generalization. This pure conjecture. "I'll just make up my own generalization."

Excuse me, but where do you expect an artist to get exposure and advertisement the industry provides them with? Sorry, but most people do not spend their free time looking for new obscure artists they have never heard of before on the internet.

Rule of thumb: average person has to hear a song at least five times before they decide wheather or no they like it or not. This will not happen on the internet.

Sorry, ok, I am Linux user, and I have downloaded a few mp3s. But I am also a musician, and I don't feel like being drowned out but every joe-blow in his basement with multitrack software on his computer.

  21. Re:A pity... on The War Between p2p and Record Companies Heating Up? · · Score: 0, Troll

If the music industry becomes obsolete, you will have no new music to download. Most musicians can not market themselves as successfully as record companies can. Sure, anyone can put up a web page for marketing or distibution, but people still need to know that the web site exists.

Also, because just about anybody record songs in their basements and put them on the internet, they lack credibility. ANYONE can do it. Under this model, we will end up with an increased supply, but the product won't be nearly as good. This why we have professional organisations for doctors and engineers. We know we are getting a competent person if they are a professional (baring strange exceptions).

  25. EVoting on Could E-Voting Cure Voter Apathy? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I did a paper on this subject. I did not find that there was very much to benifate from an electronic system in terms of user turn out.

The main stumbling block with electronic voting is trust. Even if the system is perfectly trust worthy, people must be able to believe that it's trust worthy to trust it. People must be able to see why it is trust worthy. Electronic voting would be too obscure for most people to be able to understand.
