The administrators of women's websites really ARE smarter than the administrators of men's websites.

    CNN Fooled Again!

  3. Paranoia is warranted, but Alaska has the solution on Black Boxes to Track Driving Habits? · · Score: 2

But I suspect that most people, like the people who live in Alaska, will just stop paying insurance rates.

Seriously. People in Alaska get into accidents, and then they don't fix their car. Every other car on the road has a big dent in it.

  4. Go Daddy and less Spam on Cert Slamming, or, Desperate Companies Behaving Badly · · Score: 1

I switched from one of the big evil registar companys to Go Daddy and I've gotten far less of this sort of spam.

  5. At the University where I work... on Myths about Internet growth · · Score: 3, Interesting

Usage tends to grow by leaps and bounds every time someone comes up with a new file sharing protocol.

Maybe that statement was from the good ol' days of Napster.

  7. Why so simple? Educate the masses instead! on The Open Source Cookbook? · · Score: 2

If you really want simple, put a slab of beef in a pot of boiling water (that's what the english do). It tastes terrible.

Really, if I can offer the suggestion, what you should do is provide a section on how to LEARN how to make basic preparations. How to fry, how to braise, how to mince. How to season properly, and with what seasonings for different ethnic varieties. Having that sort of knowledge will let you cook well even without a recipe!

  8. It may be too simple. on Open Source Politics - Maintaining Your Vision? · · Score: 4, Insightful

If you want to avoid the problems of an early release, don't let everyone see it until it's in final form. Post to forums and ask for dedicated beta testers, and use their input instead.

    .

  9. Sony Take Note - Mod this up! on Sony's New Bookshelf MP3 Player -- Audio TiVo? · · Score: 2

This is an excellent point, which is totally correct! Almost all independent record labels give away mp3s. This proprietary system is doomed to fail.

This guy's post should be modded up.

  10. JonKatz is a good reviewer on High Score · · Score: 2

  16. Would've been nice... on The State of PC Audio · · Score: 1

To have information about onboard noise levels.

Onboard noise makes it almost impossible for computer sound cards to live up to audiophile standards. Especially in the area of do it yourself home recording. I know on my SB Platinum the noise floor is always about -56 db, which is annoying.

  17. Revolution on Complete Net Cafe Shutdown After Beijing Fire · · Score: 1

Maybe the chinese will finally rise up against the harsh systematic authoritarianism which prevents them from thinking freely.

Or maybe they'll just put all their energy into making more tasty Noodle Bowl for me. Either way I'm happy.

  18. Conscientious Consumerism VS. Customer Demand on Warcraft III Gone Gold · · Score: 0

While most of us should be ditching anything attached to Vivendi, the lure of Warcraft III is very strong. I know that in my office, most everyone has already pre-bought.

I think we've argued the semantics almost to death in these forums. What we need is some civil resistance, Thoreau style. Quite simply, if you buy this game, you are supporting the oppression of the internet, and most importantly, Evil.

And to borrow from Thoreau, if you should think otherwise, just remember that by paying that poll tax you're supporting the war on mexico, and keeping the colored from voting.

  21. This is true.. think about the censorship on Music Industry Seeks Payola Inquiry · · Score: 2, Insightful

I work at a student-run radio station, and you wouldn't believe how great the state of music is in america. We get tons of music everyday from great independent artists. But if you listen to Clear-Channel, you're likely to think that American music has reached an all-time low.

And Clear Channel is the company that imposed a ban on about a 1000 songs after September. It hurts artists when their music isn't played anymore.

  22. Soldiers without conscience. on X-45 Makes Debut Flight · · Score: 1

I don't think anybody at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks even knew this was happening. I think those crazy Dutch just slurped down the image from our local linux mirror (which is maintained by our LUG).

It seems sort of bad form. The mirror is there for everyone, but bandwidth for the sake of bandwidth....

And now of course, EVERYONE will start trying to see how fast they can suck down our bandwidth. I bet my internet connection at work is terrible tomorrow.

  25. If Microsoft were smart... on Microsoft vs. Northwest Schools Part III · · Score: 2, Insightful

They would give away operating systems to schools, so that they could compete with the absurd dominance of Mac in schools.
