Inflicting yourself on someone else's stupidity, especially if the someone else is not hurting anyone else, is as much a violation of someone's rights as guessing that their password is 'password' or the name of their mom's dog and then using that to trash their files.

Knowing Maxis, there will be a monthly fee. Originally 'The Sims' was supposed to be provided with new objects weekly that could be downloaded from the website. That stopped after a couple of months, and the only way to get new objects that had been produced by Maxis is to buy the upgrades. The last upgrade was so pathetic, I gave it away.

My guess is that Maxis just couldn't get it together for Simsville--they have some real gems in some of their games, but some of them are real stinkers.

I can think of at least five people I work with (and I work at a small company, about 50 people in 5 divisions) who wouldn't care that innocents died. I've heard many comments about bombing the whole country (but no one can seem to tell me WHICH country with absolute certainty), and about bombing the entire Middle East.

I'm not advocating being happy about deaths, and I'm not saying it's perfectly OK for people to rejoice about this incident, but I think we need to consider that if the tables were turned, a small portion (hopefully only a small portion) would react in the same way, and you can bet those reactions would make it on TV.

Anyone have a guess as to whether 'useable on existing computers' will apply to my 300mHz dinosaur, or is it time to retire it to the hardware pasture in my closet?

It's entirely possible that the terrorists used weapons that were completely legal to carry on board the plane, since a passenger may carry a knife with a blade up to four inches long onto a plane (think pocket knife, nail file, etc.). One of the passengers who called her husband from one of the planes said that the hijackers were using box cutters, and that stewardesses had been stabbed.

Unfortunately, freedom requires a certain degree of responsibility.

Something I've heard repeatedly on the radio here are people who work at airports saying that security is bad, they've seen employees bring contraband into airports frequently. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE??? Don't these people realize they have a responsibility, not just as employees of the airport but as citizens of America and members of the human race, to take action when they see this? Safety and security are not something we can leave up to the authorities without sacrificing great amounts of personal freedom (and I for one am not willing to do that), so it is up to individuals to watch ourselves and our surroundings.

I think Canada must be getting some screwy news on this, one of my coworkers is from Canada and her mother called saying she had heard a plane had crashed in the town of Summit, Colorado. There is no town of Summit, Colorado, although there is a county, but nothing has happened there that I've heard about (I live and work about an hour from Summit county).

However, the "Goodbye to Mile High" football game was postponed, which, to some Coloradans, is more devastating than an airplane crash.

    The local papers here are:
    Rocky Mountain News
    Denver Post

Neither of these have reported any airplane strikes, but feel free to look for yourself.

If I remember correctly (and I could be wrong, I haven't had to even look at anything web-related from a work standpoint in over a year) scrolling, whether it is using the scrollbar with the mouse, using the mouse wheel, or using the pg-up and pg-down keys, is an event upon which code can be activated. This is what allows (again, IF I'm remembering correctly) ads that retain the same position within the browser while you scroll to retain that position instead of scrolling off the page when you scroll down.
