These posts should serve was a warning to profit-minded corporations everywhere about what NOT to do! Tech built to last 30 years as opposed to just 3? Are you kidding me? Think of all the lost revenue!
One must draw a distinction between knowledge and information (knowledge is useful, information is just information).
I think some Neil Postman would be of use here.
500 years ago, people weren't reading, they weren't really doing much of anything productive. It wasn't until the Renaissance that things really started humming.
Of course, you're ignoring the society which kick-started the Renaissance and speaking primarly of Europe.
I took the hospital example as something off the cuff, as in, insert example here. I didn't realize you were referring to something specific. My point was, in Islam, there are rules in warfare. Any idiot with a chip on his soldier can't go out and start killing.
According to the tradition, one of the fastest people to go to the hellfire will be the soldier who fights to be brave, but says he is doing it for Allah. Hypocrisy only lasts in this world (that is, the hypocrisy of these so called "martyrs").
First off, "Koran" is not a very good english spelling. Qur'an (or Quran) is closer to the mark. Also, the aya (verse) you quote mentions a punishment "against those who wage war against Allah and His apostle..." Allah's Apostle (Muhammad, here) is dead, and therefore nobody today can wage a war against him. Driving a truck filled with explosives into a hospital is not justified by this or any passage in the Qur'an, as the killing of innocents/civilians is stricly prohibited in Islam. Granted, terrorists do it anyway, but that's why we call them that.
Of course, computers aren't exactly a financial investment. You buy them for their use, not in the hopes that you will gain a monetary return. Of course, if you upgrade a lot (as in buy a new system), a low resale value can be a pain. Same as with cars. "My trade in value is what?!"
and we'll/. the servers all to hell, bringing the whole project to a standstill, causing all funding to be revoked and the books just burned to make space for more missles to be shot at Iraq.
I dunno, sign me up! One page a day can really add up if you (and others) stick to it. I see the distributed part, except our computers aren't doing the processes in the background, we're doing it in the foreground. But I'm definitly willing to give up a few minutes of my day for a good cause. (Note, this is a good cause).
Actually Mezo-Americans developed the wheel, only it was used for children's toys rather than utility. The reason for this being that there were no beasts of burden to drive any sort of "cart" or "wagon." Everything was carried on a man's back, no wheels needed.
I hope I'm alive when we get a space elevator and this stuff can really kick into gear.

No way man. I have a RECEIPT. That little bastard is mine!
Well yeah, that's because Redmond is located within the US.
*ducks*
This sort of thing happens all the time in Second Life. Why is this news?
Sweet! 200fps! I can't be stopped!
In a post 911 world... ...oh wait.
Man, my favorite part about chatting in games is talking smack.
we need more studies!
We cannot stand for this! Chinese chicks are too hot!

Well, time for Seppuku!
But what about all the people who support Intelligent Design? Oh sorry... I must be new here.

This is exactly the rationale Steve Jobs had in deciding against the subscription model.

Even "the truth" should be questioned--so we know it truly is the truth.
what Jean Valjean has to say about the prosecutor's side.
