  3. Re:Is this standard practice? on .biz Domain Lottery on Hold · · Score: 2

Names that are generic terms shouldn't be registered at all, it's unfair for one company to get that much marketing advantage over another. If Joe Shmoe is looking for sprockets, the first thing he's probably going to type is www.sprockets.com. It's really not fair to hand that domain over to Cogswell Cogs and exclude Spacely's Sprockets.

I agree with the idea, but what happens if the name of the company is "News Corportation" or "Sports Store"? What if you're the only company in the world to sell widgets, do you keep the "widget.com" domain until someone else makes them? Not to mention that there is no overall definition to the term "generic". Is "Xerox" a generic term or not? Does it give them an advantage in the copier market?

Do you exclude anything that shows up as a single word in the dictionary? Do you require everyone to have a URL like "widgetstore.com?"

I agree in principle, but I don't think there is any way to get rid of the generic names. It would be a HUGE administrative headache... probably why they dropped it when the Internet started getting super-popular.

  4. Hollings: who is his master?!? on Red Hat puts out Legislation Alert on the SSSCA · · Score: 2

I did some basic searches to see if I could find the campaign contribution record of Fritz Hollings, the bozo that is behind this outrage. I couldn't find anything, but I doubt that matters... but we do need to know who is master is.

What does matter is that these groups made HUGE soft money contributions to BOTH sides in the last election. These corporate companies (like Microsoft and entrainment companies) are using the soft money system to rule the country. This is the root of these outrageous bills, and they will continue until the corporate rule of America is fixed.

We don't only need to educate about the moral outrages of this current bill, we have to fight the soft money structure. We need to get soft money banned. People complain this restricts speech, but this structure is actually HINDERING speech because the small guy is getting drowned out; getting rid of soft money actually PROTECTS free speech (and free speech should be based on the individual, not the corp.) We need Campaign finance reform, and we need it BADLY.

I am listening to "Marketplace" on my public radio station. The devistation to the financial markets in the U.S. and world will be huge. The "bombings" were without a doubt a frontal assalt on our financial structure; a direct swipe at capitalism.

Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Dutchebank, and hundreds of the bigtime names in the financial world had their main offices in that building. Thousands of U.S. dollars filtered through those offices.

I don't want to minimize the loss of life by a long shot... this is obviously what we need to center our thoughts on right now, but just a notice that this will have major reprocussions on the economy of the United States and the world. The dollar is going to lose a lot of value in the coming days, and who knows what account information was lost in the attack.

The world will go on. The markets will continue. We will continue... but we need to all get ready for a fight!
