The software landscape is very, very broad. There are times when it is irrational to dislike Microsoft and times when it isn't. Microsoft is getting its butt kicked in the server side - what's the point of screaming about it being a monopolist there? Microsoft strangled WordPerfect - let's pile on it with OpenOffice. For me (notice those two words!:), Visual Studio is a great product that Borland hasn't been able to match (it's come close, but not quite), and there is plenty of competition in the compiler world, so why should I dislike Microsoft in that area?
The point is, taken as a whole I think MS does about as much good as it does damage, and with the coming of OSS, it's ability to do harm is greatly lessened. Nobody wants a world of Microsoft, but I remember the early 90s when I couldn't trade files with a Mac, WordPerfect wouldn't work with Word, and I spent 19 hours just trying to get my soundblaster 16 to work. I don't want that world either.
with this app. Instead, it seems to be focused more on PaintShop Pro's users. The GIMP tries to compete with the big boy on the block - PS - and this app seems like a clone of PSP or that personal-use PS Adobe put out. I for one would like something free like this out there. Yesterday I had to create a couple of screenshots of a bug and send them to the developer on a pretty much stock machine. I was left with hitting printscreen, pasting them into Paint, writing on them with the text tool and sending them as email BMP attachments. It worked but I felt like a dufus. Paint has been in need of an overhaul for a decade. It's as if notepad was still at the level of ed.
If it's meant to be a replacement for MS Paint as the blurb states, I don't think the Gimp should feel threatened. The chasm between Paint and Gimp is lightyears wide. It's unlikely this program could attract the OSS devotion necessary to become really big, especially what with its association with MS and the sometimes irrational dislike this inspires in some of us.
Call up the local mom and pop computer hardware store and ask to use their floor model routers and to donate a spool of ethernet cable, then let them plaster the place with fliers. Take personal responsibility for the borrowed hardware. Treat it well and return it. Repeat.
And join the child pornographers on IRC? Let's stay above ground and fight instead. There's no reason to be pushed around by 20th century behemoths while developing 21th century media distribution models.
We're required to use NetBeans at school. I end up coding all my stuff in IntelliJ and copying and pasting. NetBeans is much too controlling in terms of all the code it generates for the UI and has always seemed very counterintuitive to me.
I'm not sure why this would make you yawn. It's a CD that you put in and "pops up an XServer ready to go." On top of which, you still have access to the Windows software you're running. It's what you're looking for minus the reboot and adding the already-running programs.
Thirty seconds ago I finished collecting, burning and giving most of this software for a friend - along with zonealarm, avg antivirus, etc - whose computer has been zombied, specifically because OpenCD was too out of date. Then I open/. and see this. Ain't that always the way?
This is dangerous stuff to mess around with...

... like security, forensics is best left to those who really know what they're doing. The results of a forensics investigation can very often end up being part of a civil or criminal case and amature mistakes can get the case thrown out. Contaminating the data by not properly imaging it, not knowing where to find hidden data, or misinterpreting what is found are all very easy to do. Be very sure you have all your bases covered before selling yourself as a forensic investigator.
Ruby is really picking up speed here in the US and I'm surprised to see that's not included. It even has a movement and language leader, Matz. I'm not sure how fluent he is in English. For me, Ruby certainly was easy to learn and would seem to be a perfect candidate for inclusion in a light weight language discussion. Odd...
... at which Indian companies leverage open source technologies to become more sleek and responsive, and thus compete more aggressively with American firms. That's a good thing - depending on which side of the Indian Ocean (and Pacific) you're on. It'll certainly help India move further into a information economy, by addressing the challenges such a polyglottal society faces, while the US continues to not deal with its major obstacle: a poor education system that doesn't prepare a workforce for the new century's technologies.
If I am fluent in C++ (powerful), Java (run anywhere) and Ruby (scripting), what advantage does this new language have over those? What problems will this new language solve? If it's one of those above, how is this one better than the language I'm already using? I'm all for learning a new language for fun, but for work I'd better have a good reason for putting out the effort.
The post says there's an incumbent in the race, but there isn't. The current governor, Gary Locke (D), chose not to run again, so both Gregoire (D) and Rossi (R) are challengers.
that iPods are so powerful is that it's coupled with the Apple music store. The seamless intergration between reasonable prices and DMR and synching with the iPod is hard to beat. Do any of the new iPod killers have comparable connections to music management software/store? My old MP3 player required MusicMatch, which sucked.
... the US will quickly becoome a second-world country. China and India understand that an educated population is the only way to make it in today's world. We prefer to spend our money on tax cuts and trickle-down economics. The best medical care in the world should be in the US, but the way our schools are now, there are just no students to provide that service.
For the love of Kaylee, chill. I was indeed referencing Star Trek. My point was that if Star Trek and its recent mediocrity - I'm 25, so I'm a TNG man - gets all that airtime, how can a gem like Firefly get canned after only 8 episodes.
This is good news, but I would prefer Firefly

I'm still mourning Firefly. The movie's in production, but I don't want 10 episodes and a movie. I want 7 years of shows and 10 movies. And then many, many more spin offs. (Inara's brothel - a wacky situation comedy? Jayne and his cohorts, an A-Team for the 25th century?).
What's been your experience with the directory listing, ie, listing yourself as wanting to chat via voice? Sounds interesting but subject to the same problems as most IMing. I loved Odigo for its international flavor and ability to match up interests. How does Skype compare to this?
It's there. It's a few 100s of a euro for most place per minute - about 1/10 the usual cost. Why do they give it in Euros? And what do you call 1/100 of a Euro? A europenny?
That's why the most important tool while working on computers is another computer, even if it's just a Win95 box with Mosaic. It's suicide to deny yourself the great sea of information - and porn - that is the internet.
FedoraNews.org has a great tip on installing the isos over NFS . This way you can save yourself a few blank CDs and the actual installation takes no time at all.
That's low enough for me! I'm off to get my GameCube.
Really, that's about as much as I'm willing to pay for a non-upgradable piece of hardware that will be obsolete in a year...
I've worked with this one for my home clients and I like it a lot. I have not, however, seen anything like it on the OEM market.
You're right though, I would buy one if in a second if I came across one...
