Do you remember when we didn't even have cars. Oh that was a grand time, no oil changes, no breakdowns, no timing belt failures, and no worry of rising gas prices. Man those were the days.
Yeah, and there was plenty of work for the road janitors, even in those small one-horse towns.
For normal city driving, there's usually too much stop & go for cruise control to be useful. No matter what I set it at, I still have to hit the brakes when the old person ahead of me slows down.
You didn't have to be a heavy user to have trouble with W95. When I used it at work, I don't think I had a day without a BSOD. At the worst, I had 15! I counted them! NT4 was far better, but still pretty bad.
XP was GoodEnough (tm) for stability but was a bad joke for security (especially pre-SP2). Unfortunately, from the POV of a Linux advocate, W7 probably IS GoodEnough (tm) in the ways Doze used to suck.
I agree that we won't see "The Year of Linux" anytime soon.
Pre-SP2, Linux certainly WAS far superior to XP security wise. It probably still is, though admittedly Vista & W7 are vastly better than even post SP2 XP.
If I want a Windows box, I can go to the nearest WorstBuy, buy a machine and it has Windows on it. If I want a Mac, I can go to the other section of WorstBuy, or to an Apple Store if I can shove past the iPad 3 fanatics, and it has OSX. If I want Linux, I have to install the expletive deleted thing myself, and risk "bricking" a machine that's already working with the OS it came with.
Until you can buy an Ubuntu box at WorstBuy, it won't be the "Year of Linux".
Agreed! I'm on FB, but I don't post anything even remotely sensitive. Other than finding out when my last bowel movement was, there would be little point for a spy to "friend" me.
Even a "Hello World" program can have bugs. As soon as I modify it to allow the user to type his name and get "Hello $NAME", there's the potential for buffer overflow.:)
To me, "Metro" means those crappy busses where the drunks pissed/pooped in the back seat. Come to think of it, that might be an appropriate name after all.
I'm not "ordinary", but I have trouble understanding this about multitasking. I'm doing multiple things at any given time. Right now, I have Outlook, a webapp in IE, a desktop folder, a spreadsheet, and Firefox open. None are full-screen and some are minimized. To me, it doesn't make sense to wait for a program to load when it's already running. I suspect that some of the people who close a program before opening another are used to older versions of Windows that choked if you tried to run too much at a time.
Whether I'm reading an ebook or a paper book, I'm likely to have trouble with distractions. It has nothing to do with the medium and everything to do with just not having enough free time. OTOH, when I DO have a block of free time, and the book is good, I can and do focus on it, even if it's on my iPad.
I thought slashdot was an anti-social network.

Agreed! Maybe the reason aspirin users had less cancer is because they died from ulcers first.
Or SUVs. Unless the dinosaurs were more advanced than we thought.
This IS Tennessee. I have seen no evidence of evolution in the people of Tennessee.
Me too, but I didn't realize those sandpeople were writing fairy tales. :P

The barter system. I'll trade you my pet goat for X amount of weed.
Which is why you get there early, before everyone else gets the food, and beat off/stab/shoot anyone who gets in your way.
Nah, I'd rather have cake. But I will have 3.14 slices of it.
I'm still using XP at work. We'll eventually switch to Win7. I'm sure Win8 wouldn't be on the table, even if it were any good.

I know such people who lead perfectly normal lives. I've done tech-support for them, and I can confirm that they ARE brain dead.
I would hope that you could actually USE your car (without the SYNC system) while updating, so you could do it while driving to work.

Either one is highly vulnerable to bad drivers.

Well, this is the best and biggest iPad they've made, so the obvious choice is - The iPad Maxi !
If I can't download my latest ebook on my iPhone, I'll probably start talking to the other passengers. Beware the Law of Unintended Consequences.

These days, 6 million would barely buy a finger.
