I remember when word first started out about "it", and "it" was it's name. Anything that was so revolutionary, would need to be hype and clouded in so much mystry.
I knew from the start, all the hype was to try and get people interested as to want to buy it.
Anything that has to be first over hyped to sell is doomed.
As a teenager I had a Tandy Color Computer with a 300 buad modem, seen everyone starting to put up BBS's so I wrote my own in BASIC. No files to share, just user login and post messages. Later I moved up to a Tandy Color Computer 2, and started to run a BBS using OS9 (Unix type OS), I ran the BBS in a Shell window and could run my programs and run the BBS at the same time....that when windows was just starting and I had multiple windows and true multitasking. My last upgrade for the BBS was to a Color Computer 3, 20 MB Hare Drive, I would download files off the internet for users. Was not long after that I closed my BBS down, got too busy with college to run it.
I have been a long time Trek fan, but not to the point that I don't have a real life. I have put off seeing it to the point there is no theater around showing it now. So maybe renting it on DVD, when it comes out.
I few friends said they thought it was ok, not as bad as expected. But they also like MST2K, not much for taste there.
I seen the previews for it and the plot it just did not jump out at me. Though my wife also wanted to see it... not going to complain about her taste, she married me so.
I think it has been a problem with a lot of sci-fi today thin plots. Makes me think the TV exec's think we are all mind numb robots who only care about sex and violence. Not that I don't like a little of both, I have to get in my Quake time in every so often and blow things up and the wife takes care of the other.
I am about to take the broadband plung and drop the second phone line.
So far Earthlink Cable has the best deal 41.95 a month, free cable modem, no setup charge, free install and 21.95 for the first three month. Also dialup access for when I am on the road nation wide.
Next is Road Runner about the same deal but 44.95 a month after the first three months at 19.95
Both cable services have no catchs to the rate pricing.
Our local Tellco Bell South DSL, runs 49.95, unless you signup to extra features on your phone line then it is 45.95. They have a installation charge of $99 or $35 if you do it your self, activation charge of 50.00 and Modem free after rebate(mail in) and first three months at 19.95.
Earth Link also offers DSL in our area, same deal as with cable free installation and modem. but only $49.00 and three months at 21.95
Easy to see why cable is taking off so fast, compitition and cost.
Look's to me like a slick way to get a few investors to shell out some money While the owner to stick most of the money in his pocket for salery. And a few dollars for a net looking website without any content. Then when I falls apart, say it was Sony or MS that keep them out of the market.
And with a name like Phatom.... Does not have a Ghost of a chance.
I have been thinking the same thing and even been looking into the hardware for it.
The ATI all-n-wonder card has all the features for a nice set-top system. Features like: Digital video recorder TV guide type information for programming the DVR. Live pause Multiple video outputs, s-video, DVI, video, monitor. Digital audio output for 5.1 suround sound.
They even support Linux by providing information to developers to create video drivers for it.
I don't have cable and watch few shows on TV. Most people I know are watching fewer and fewer amounts of TV. With most people having cable and with so many channels now on cable the few that are watching is so spread out,and advertisers now have to spread the money that they spend to more channels. So the old broadcast stations now get less money do to the spreading of the advertising dollars.
At first thought it will be a flop, but who am I for taste in movies. Since I don't find the MTV/Saturday night knock of movies funny. But look at JackA$$ which has done well at the movies or Adam Sandler(Who I hate with a passion).
So the mindless MTV crowd my make this a big hit....
I average person with the said items would be limited in the kill ratio.
Take a gun with nine bullets, does not mean nine kills. If he is crazy and just shooting, he may only kill one or two. But a trained shooter then maybe each bullet a kill shoot.
The average person with a knife would be limited kill, but a person trained in knife combat could kill more then average person with a gun. Being that he is up against a group of everyday people. Look at the people who took over the air planes with box cutters.
Now an average person with just there hands will not be able kill more then one person, but take a person trained combat. They can kill with one good hit. I have see one guy take down five untrained people in a fight with his bare hands and feet.
I predicted it would not last a full season on a post I made after the show first aired, I was not impressed at all by it. WildWest meets a Farscape knockoff of a crew.
I am a long time sci-fi fan. I seen almost all of the Star Trek movies in the Theater, except the last few of old ST movies. The movies got so badly written, I could not bare to watch, even on video.
Even with the TNG movies, Generations was maybe the best. I think from the trailer, that I watched before Harry Potter 2. I need not watch the movie, since the plot and everything we given it.
The only really cool space shows of late have been Babylon 5, Farscape, first season the Andromeda, Lex (though it is just a bit weird) reminds me of some of the old British sci-fi shows.
I do not know why TV executives think shows need to be dumb down, but to me it is killing sci-fi not helping it and nether does being over PC help.....
For the month of December, one of their biggest sales months.
Every slashdot reader should email, ICQ, etc all of their family and friends and get them in on this.
Should I play it or just sit back and stare in awe

Superhero Smackdown

Let's compare the two:
Superman: Clean-cut country boy in the big city, small town values, all round good guy, always fight's fair.
Batman: Traumatic child hood, watch his parents get killed, grew up in a corporate world where it is dog eat dog to survive, does what ever is needed to win, thinks out of the box.
Superman see Batman as another super hero good guy, thinks he could use a hug.
Batman on the other hand looks at Superman as competition, and would look for weak spots to exploit for his own personal gain. Of course he would know all about Kryptonite and the means to get it.
Batman would have a natural upper hand on Superman, based on his background.
It is North Carolina Tax law that you file on your tax form the amount of anything you have purchessed and not paid any state sales TAX on it.
It applies to internet purchesses, if you did not pay the CA sales TAX say for computer parts from CA. You must pay NC sales tax on it. But of course they have not real way of knowing unless they start making your show all of your credit card recepts on your TAX form.

I guess ICQ is close, but is not been very linux friendly.

Another I think even better was the video CD game called Cliff Hanger.
Based around a popular anime called Lupin the III, got me interested the anime scene back then when it was still un-known to most americans.
At least I had the ball's to post with my real name.
And you don't know half of what NASA knew about the state of the shuttle.
I worked with a system design group for NASA, so I know a little more then you.
It is not the first time someone in Goverment has had to cover their ass over things.
Here is some many people don't talk about but any rocket that does up into space has a remote selfdistruct system.
If NASA thinks it is in trouble they will blow it up to prevent it from hitting a city.
When NASA saw the shuttle starting to fail the blew it up to prevent it from hitting a city and killing lot's of people.
Now they don't want people to know the shuttle has this same protection system, so they are going to blame it all on the wing failure.

Maybe using some of the old motherboards and hardware I have laying around.
I had an old component CD player was trying to hack and place a motherboard and hardware in it, but just not the room needed for the hardware I had.
What is the min. hardware spec. needed to handle MP3 and streaming?
I bet Bill gates is not happy to have not made the list but Steve Jobs did.

To me sort of like having someone else make love to your girl friend for you, while you watch!
Then again some of you may enjoy that......
