My hypothesis is that the responses would be the same. To test this, go to Disneyland and kick Mickey Mouse in the crotch. Then, kick a comparably-sized human male in the crotch. Note the similarities in the response.

The real story here is that the Department of Homeland Security is also responsible for credit fraud. One of the scams people pull is to steal a number, write a bogus check to the credit card company for that card (which guarantees the credit will be there), and then spend the amount that was written on the check before the check is cashed (and detected as bogus).

This scheme (called Kiting) should be on the decline now that the Check21initiative has been in effect since late last year.

For most, it means that the little images of checks that come back on your bank statements are just as good as the cancelled checks that used to be returned to you, but now clears the way for electronic presentation of funds. What used to take several days for clearing is now as fast as an EFT (electronic funds transfer), so they'll know right away if the funds are available in the account.

Why shouldn't they run stories about promising stem cell research vs. some wackadoos who think a microscopic clump of cells=living, breathing person? The former is an issue that has wider implications for the quality of life of many people who suffer some rather horrific conditions.

Whoa. Race, sex, nationality, and so forth are entirely separate from education since they're what the person is. Unless you're Michael Jackson or a eunuch, you can't change those things and its rightly illegal to discriminate on those lines (AA quotas aside). Education is something you CAN change. It shows an employer that you set your mind to a goal and stuck it out until you got your degree, learning relevant info and getting liberal arts education along the way. 40-50 years ago, you could walk out of high school and land a decent manufacturing job or other such gig with the right hookup. Today, the deck is stacked against you if you follow that route, unless you're heading for a trade school or to the service sector.
