slashdotting a xanga that plays music obnoxiously loud. awesome.
yeah i know this is just me bitching, but here i am listening to some very nice soothing iron & wine when all of a sudden i'm blasted with whatever it was that played before i closed my browser.
When I worked at a radio station, I was responsible for scheduling and issuing the required weekly and monthly tests of the EAS.
I always thought that the system wasn't exactly that secure, as it was a relayed system and if a primary station issued a false EAS message, it would be relayed to all of those stations designated to listen to the primary...
One time when configuring a new EAS machine, I was tempted to issue a Tsunami warning (for the Chicagoland area), but decided I'd rather not go to jail or pay some huge fine.
It really makes no difference if these arguments can be used a a defense or not. THESE ARE NOT CRIMINAL CASES. There is NO JURY.
Basically, you can go before a Federal Judge and try to convince him you shouldn't pay $150,000 per song, or you can settle with the RIAA for ~$2000. To do the former, you'll need to hire a lawyer and be out more than $2000 anyway.
That's why it's so scary. These aren't criminal cases. Hardly anyone even goes to court to try and make a case at all.
I suggest a 12" iBook or Powerbook, it's the perfect size -- super portable, and non-distracting if you want to use it to take notes in a class.
An iPod is also a nice accessory -- it will replace any need for a portable CD player and collection of CDs -- and it can store calendar/address book.
I don't suggest a PDA. I had one, never used it. I used a regular paper planner. I found it eaiser.
One reason why I suggest not bringing some uber-powerful computer or laptop, because then you'll be tempted to sit around playing games and such all time and missing out on the social atmosphere and such.
Also, some sort of calculator would help. I had my trusty TI-86.
What is new about this? The OBD and OBD II standards have been around for a long time... you can go out and buy a tool that will interface with your car and show you the codes... You can even get a cable that lets you hookup a laptop the sensor port.
I have used PayPal for over two years now, I have the debit card and use it often. I earn around 2% on my balance and can move money to and from my actual bank accounts. I have never had ANY problems with it. I've used it mainly for eBay transactions, but I still keep a $300-500 balance and have never had any issues.

This is the wrong outlook on politics, at least in my opinion. One should not refrain from lobbying, that's the only way to get opinions heard in the first place. Just because they might not fully understand the exact impact their policies may have, doesn't mean we shouldn't try to educate them.

Run for a seat on your local library board. I can almost guarantee you that you won't see much competition, and heck there might even be an open seat that you can run for uncontested.
Libraries are not run or operated by the Federal Government, at least in the United States. They are run by local government, paid for my the local library district's taxpayers.
Show up to the library board meetings, bring your friends with you. Ask them what they think about these issues, and what they are doing to keep a balance between needed record keeping and just letting Project TIPS or the Homeland Security department grep through records for "nuclear weapon" or "anthrax."
You can make a difference! Most people it seems lately take no interested in local / town / area governments, but that is where the normal citizen can make the MOST difference!
If they really wanted to, Dell, or other companies could cancel their contracts with Microsoft and sell PCs with no Operating System or PCs with Linux. However, they know that the customer base that "wants" Windows is larger than those that want no OS or Linux. So thus, they will agree to Microsoft's wishes and keep renewing their contracts.
Why don't we hear the Mac people complaining about similar things? As far as I know, though I may be wrong, you can't purchase a Mac with no operating system on it. In fact, Apple's selling practices are more constrained than Microsoft, they just don't have the market share MSFT does.
Basically, what I'm trying to say is that companies will do what is profitable, and that is to sell Microsoft Windows on their desktops.
If you don't like the fact that Dell won't sell you a computer with no Operating System on it, then don't buy a Dell. If you don't like the fact that Microsoft is forcing Dell not to sell no OS computers, then don't buy Windows and run something else.
The majority of people complaining here are the ones who wouldn't buy a Dell in the first place, and who don't run MS software anyway.
Microsoft has a monopoly in the OS (If we define monopoly by a excessive share of the market). So what? No one mandates that you buy it. In fact, with advanced in Linux and the various windows managers and the software available, you can do virtually anything in Linux you could in Windows and just as eaisly.
Use the power of the market (or the lack of a market -- free software) to tell Microsoft you don't like what they are doing. If you are a Sys Admin, urge your company to run *NIX instead of the latest and "greatest" Windows server suite.
Yes, but your post lacks credibility because it begins with "I just had a similiar discussion with my girlfriend..."

... too bad HL2 will never come out to actually run on the machine.

This movie rocks. I am glad someone else appreciates it. I've seen it about three times, and I just can't get over how well done it is.
Please! For the last six years neither Microsoft nor Apple have come up with anything really new
Uh, what about OS X?
... I wonder if this work contracted by Global Crossing or Adelphia?
not only was the sex drive lost, the whole array went down.

The editors changed it, to Chemotherapy... which is obviously not the same... Oh well.
While this is quite a scary concept... we need to remember...

I mean, come on, Poindexter!
It's funny, laugh.

The existance of a "Hello Kitty" 'faceplate' for phones is more than enough evidence in my book to prove this point.
