  1. Re:Constitutional rights? on Spyware Company Sues Utah Over Anti-Spyware Law · · Score: 4, Insightful

The company is probably going to win but it boils down to this:

EULAs are out of freakin' control

We simply need to pass a law to remove the power of the EULA (because anyone in their right mind KNOWS FOR A FACT that a 58 page EULA is simply clicked through by the average user). NOBODY installs this software with any knowledge of what it really does.

Once the rights are back in the hands of the consumer, this will never be a problem. Oh, and I wish someone would excercise their LEGAL right to install a counter-measure in the same way that this scumware is installed.

All announced next-gen phone chips are coming with WiFi integrated. What happens when your WiFi access point allows cellular users to roam? Then you can do cool things like walk into work and have your work phone routed to your cell phone. Similarly, you can walk into your house and your home phone rings on your cell phone (or verse-visa). Videoconferencing, picture taking, movie taking, music video, DVD movies (that are blasted to your TV via UWB)...

Its all coming soon. Of course, a new TLD isn't really needed but it will fit in there somewhere.

I wouldn't use the term "stupid", but, as a generalization, women certainly need to be treated differently due to the difference in technical skill level.

I realize that there are some women who are technical. However, as a percentage, that number is about the same as the guy:girl ratio here on slashdot. My wife still wastes all kinds of time with film so I am in the process of getting her a PictBridge compatible printer and camera.

This was actually on the board for the Dodge Viper. Because of the vehicles 10-cylinder engine, the exhaust note is more like a UPS truck than that of a sports car. The idea was that they were going to cancel the UPS truck noises and add (or simple allow) a more sports car-like sound. I was able to see/hear one of these test cars and it sounded remarkable.

  16. Re:Very cool, but.. on Toyota's Trumpet Playing Robot Showcased · · Score: 5, Insightful

It pisses me off that no American company today would ever do something like this.

That is because Wall Street is so concerned with short-term profits. Gasoline is at an all-time high while Toyota/Honda are the only companies that had the patience to develop a profitable solution to the problem. In 1997 when Toyota introduced the hybrid, they were losing lots of money on every unit sold. Now, they are selling that same technology to US-based companies.

Now, Ford isn't buying Toyota technology because it makes environmental sense. Rather, they are doing it because it makes sense for short-term profits - the same mindset that got them into this situation in the first place. This mentality will catch up to the US sooner or later. And where is solar energy?

I suppose it is really people buying OEMs getting hosed.

The people buying branded PCs really don't pay much more than $40 - $60 for Windows. MS gives huge discounts to Dell and other large OEMs. In this respect, if you build your own PC, you really have to pirate Windows. The hardware alone is about the same price as you'd pay from a big OEM.

Don't get me wrong - the joys of building a PC are worth while (especially when it comes to quality on some key components) but OEMs aren't really fronting the whole $300 on a $400 PC.

Pick up the phone and call Don Corsini and let him know how you feel.

The summary: Dishnetwork has the lowest cost programming in the US. They'd like to keep it that way so they are dropping these channels from their basic package. They will allow people to add them if the cost is deemed worth while on a per-user basis. This is good for the consumer and good for the free market because Viacom will learn that they can't just raise their prices arbitrarily and still keep their seat in the basic package.
