... First, Bush gets slammed because he didn't take over the various state National Guard units right off the bat after Katrina (after being refused authority by the Louisiana governor, which was her right to refuse). Now he signs a law that will let him do that and he gets slammed. WTF?

People were complaining that the Feds weren't responding quickly enough, and people I know (including relatives) thought the Feds should have simply taken everything over with little or no regard to the states' own sovreignty and rights. One could argue that the incompetence of inbred Louisiana government could justify such takings, but I find that dishonest. So those same people who _demanded_ that the Feds send their black helicopters and jackbooted thugs in to take matters out of the hands of the local yokels now complain when the President signs a law that gives him the authority to do so?

Think there's any politicking going on here?

And if there were enough good tech jobs that didn't involve Windows.

To be honest, taxation in the US is not _that_ much lower, considering what we get back in services compared to Canada. It used to be much different, but I'm finding that very near 50% of my paycheck goes to government in one form or another (local, state, federal) and I, as a single middle-class male of European descent, don't get fuck all back. At least in CA if I were paying 50-60% of my check in taxes I'd get "free" healthcare, and as I'm not elderly or suffering from chronic medical issues at this phase in my life I don't care about queues or rationing.

One of the biggest problems with those old jets is the massive number of ground service hours required for every hour of air time. The F-14 was one of the worst. Not to mention that maintaining a certain level of air superiority might require X of an older type of jet, versus 1/4X of a newer type of jet.

This is also applicable to expensive aircraft like the Stealth Bomber: the cost of the "package" of the older aircraft is cheaper than the cost of the Stealth Bomber package.. Like it takes how many fighter escorts, anti-SAM fighters and air-superiority, plus fueling for all of them vs just sending in a single Stealth.

ps: I really hate how topics like this bring out the flaming pinkos :/

And this is a failure? How about the F-14 was such a deterrent that air forces refused to engage with them? Maybe flying their planes, in terror, to their mortal enemies in order to prevent their complete annihilation?

And for the land-based analog btw, how about the F-15's record? 104/0...
