  1. Is someone insane enough to build...and give AI on Elon Musk Says Mark Zuckerberg's Understanding of AI Is Limited (ndtv.com) · · Score: 1

Is someone insane enough to build a self-sustaining robot soldier factory and then give an AI system complete control of it?

Frankly, Yes. It takes a few incompetent idiots with power to do just that.

Most idiot gov't are backed by greedy workers that do exactly what they want. They can easily get their golden backdoors and powerful weapons without good reasons.

So at one point the world will have a close to undefeatable tank/ robot with remote human control and AI automated system (aiming learning, shooting learning and moving learning etc.). Next some opposition will get hackers to break into the golden backdoor to take control of the remote and replace it with the AI automated system (learn moving target, shooting, next. It doesn't need to have human thinking to do that).

Now we get a stupid movie scene of a deadly weapon running loose to produce the best Darwin Award ever.

If a few hundred thousands sacrifices changed the idiots mind for better security or better AI rules, then human society will live on. If not, it will be the last Darwin Award we are getting.

So far with the hacking, wanting of backdoor, spying and leaking around the world just proves the existent of incompetent idiots with power, and combined with the system is stupid enough to do insane stuff.

  2. The Feel Good Effect on Amazon Jacked Up Prime Day Prices, Misleading Consumers, Says Vendor (foxbusiness.com) · · Score: 1

If you are a slashdotter, you are automatically excluded from the Feel Good Effect, because you won't feel it.

The term came out from a video source, but based on psychology. When two human were given a separate price tag with one that is $5 and one that is $10 with a 50% off discount. The one who had the 50% off discount felt happier with the price than the one who had the flat price of $5, even though it is the same in the end.

This is because humans especially uneducated will feel better when they see something there that make them feel smart about their purchase, often time it will be about cost saving.

This is why you will see pricing like:
    -$6.25 at 20% discount
    -Only for $4.99
-Buy two get one free at $15
When you know exactly they are still the same $5.

This effect has also been shown when a chain store decided not to apply this 'shady' practice, their profit dropped significantly. So it is essential to apply this practice to ensure profit in some store.

In Amazon case, it may be the best for their business as a whole to apply this practice. Nonetheless, Amazon should have at least gotten the consent of vendors prior to doing this practice on the listed items, as the Feel Good Effect doesn't work on educated customers and the product determines the customers base. It could very much backfire when the product is meant for educated customers.

Not to disagree with your main focus on flexible work schedule and how companies shouldn't be clock-watcher, but stating that the 3-hours hole could cause sleep cycle issue might actually in the opposite.

Providing the 3-hours lunch and nap benefit Spain workers sleep cycle as humans were not meant to have long blocks of sleep. Have you ever felt in an afternoon that it feels great to take a nap? That's the body responding to the natural pattern.

Humans were meant to have multiple shorter cycle sleeps in the day and night (Biphasic sleep / Interrupted sleep - two periods of nighttime sleep and a nap in the day). It was until industrialization that resulted in wanting people that can work long hour none stop and thus one long hour sleep. We industrialized people sleep one long night, therefore we feel working at 10pm is stressful as we get progressively sleepy and tried. However, their nap made them more energetic thus working at 10pm is not as stressful. Their nap also increases the awake time of the workers therefore actually provide a little more time for work balance.

So it may still be beneficial to Spain workers. However as it is incompatible with other industrialized world, like what you've said, only the working people of Spain can see if it is working and decide on whether or not they want to abandon their practice.

  9. You SHOULD Force Quit Apps on iOS on Public Service Announcement: You Should Not Force Quit Apps on iOS (daringfireball.net) · · Score: 1

It is good practice for consistence.

If even a single app broke the frozen state or took resources from the iphone, the reason to not force quit apps is already null. Not to mention that older iOS version might not be able to do that at all.

In addition, most users who don't keep force quit apps maintain a FULL running app list of all of their apps. Unless the iOS can ensure none of them will affect the user iphone performance, it is not good practice to tell users not force quit apps.

  10. I hate that term. It should be replaced and removed completely. Commoners have zero clue what the f that meant from the start. When they don't understand, how in the world are they going to even care?

We should really be replacing it with 'locks', 'files lock', 'Computer files lock', because that's what it basically is. It locks the file(s) up and ensure those with the key can read it.

Not to mention when we put it back into context, we can now change backdoors into terms like 'secondary key' to the locks. It makes it easier to understand why this is bad.
-you have no control of the 'secondary key'
-your locks can be unlocked by someone else with the 'secondary key'
-the 'secondary key' can be stolen without you knowing

To actually start implementing it, we really need to start changing right from the technical articles, like using a simple parentheses into Encryption (files lock) and Backdoor (Secondary Key) would be 100% better for the commoners as a starter to understand.

The more people understand the issue, the better it is to resolve the issue.

Actually, IMO I would be angry with Microsoft. I mean have you ever install an app and it works up until you open it with a message like "it's no longer supported. Uninstall it now."

It is the same as "Windows 10 is no longer supported on this PC. Uninstall this app now because it isn't compatible with Windows 10." In fact, Windows 10 isn't an app and it hasn't been installed so the second sentence only made more confusion.

When what Microsoft should have done was to put a message like this, "This version of Windows 10 is incompatible with the following hardware [list hardware]. It may cause problems after the installation. Would you like to defer the installation?"

  25. You have a good point and he/she might not have the best argument for his/her point, but the underline point he/she made is still reasonable. The underline point is "don't make yourself the center of attention when you don't want to be in the center of attention".

Let me ask you this, what exact is the purpose of creating a username? You might say to identify yourself. What about adding a profile pic? Also to identify yourself. Now, are you sure you are putting them online just as an identity? It's very likely not, you put it there so it 'connects with my publications'.

In short, you are unconsciously putting yourself in the position for attention, you wanted your publication to be recognized, and you want someone to see your profile pic and name. By doing so, you will attract a lot of good people and annoying people, including guys doing weird things like sexual harassment.

If you don't want that, his/her point is to stop putting yourself in that position. It's not about you have to be like a guy, but you should do something to avoid attention. The media had implanted a lot of marketing to create unrealistic character for women and men, so here's what it really means to avoid attention and be neutral. The way you look have when you woke up in bed is you being neutral. Anything you do on top of it is increasingly grabbing attention. If you put makeups and wore a dress, you'll surely look cute, but everyone else thinks that too including annoying guys. When you're online, stating yourself as a woman is bring attention. That's because even man normally don't state that they are a man (or maybe they're boy...).

So create your own balance to avoid attention you don't want.
