That is a feature in Firefox of which Google takes advantage. If you're using Firefox at work, however, you should look up how to turn off prefetching. I've read about people getting canned because the first site in the search results (even though not actively clicked on) was a pr0n site that got preloaded.
I think it's called "Obits," as I saw a similar beverage with beads once in the international foods section of a Dominick's supermarket in the Chicago area.
I think some companies are paying the "patent holding company" in question a protection fee so that they may continue to serve out their Blackberry services. Nokia is doing this, for example.
"2. There is little to no social stigma left to playing PC games."
No kidding...this is why every bar nowadays has a Megatouch XL system sitting *right on the bar* near the end. I've seen this machine in small, local ethnic bars in Trenton up to the bar in a fishing lodge in Canada. And there is always someone playing it and it doesn't even look out of place anymore. Btw, know what kind of hardware is inside? I saw one boot up and it's just a 486-100 with 32 megs of RAM built into a small, indestructible case with a touch screen. My brother and I had a few drinks and played one of those machines for a few hours (trivia games and a Frozen Bubble variant). That must be almost pure profit!
"American corporate law states that the profit of the shareholders is the primary consideration. Corporations are legally required to do that which maximises profits, even if it offends their personal sensibilities."
Completely untrue. A corporation must do what is in its by-laws or charter. That can be anything. A corporation is only a handy tool for organizing a business and getting resources together. The profit motive is a specific decision that must be made by people. It comes back to personal responsibility, period...not "b-b-but the piece of paper made me do it!"
Most corporate charters (or limited liability company or partnership agreements) that I read (and that's mostly what I do) state that they will go into business to manufacture a specific item or they will be vague and say they'll do anything that is not illegal. Again, someone has to *decide* to use the corporate structure to persue a certain path.
The first link to aunty-spam.com is very misleading. The link to the AG's site is the proverbial "horse's mouth." Here is what really happened: Mr. Spitzer & Yahoo have reached an agreement where Yahoo will close down all chatrooms that promote sexual relations between minors and adults. So in other words, if there was a chat room called "pre-teen hook-ups with older men 50+" or whatever, Yahoo will shut it down.
Again, minors are still allowed on Yahoo. However, Yahoo is clamping down on certain chatrooms that do not have honorable intentions.
Pssst...none of that stuff is supposed to be taken literally. The story of Adam & Eve as it appears in the Bible is one adaptation of a type of creation story that's existed for a long time. There is even a similar story that appears in some African cultures. We might as well start arguing about plot holes in the Simpsons or Star Wars...these stories point to some type of message and only serve as learning aids. That said, anyone who believes Genesis is a true story is an ignorant fool that deserves to be confused. Anyone that argues about Genesis on the presupposition that it is meant to be taken literally has been misinformed by the former.
"Isn't it funny that your free market has produced monopolies that screw the customer and our regulated one has produced competition?"
I would say you're the one with the free market, my friend. I've been saying it for years..."a free market is a regulated market" (but not necessarily the reverse case).
Case in point? The U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) which regulates our stock markets. You would never have gotten the general public investing in the stock market like it does today without an oversight committee to prevent the abuses of the 19th & early 20th centuries. Yes, you get an Enron or Worldcom now and then, but a long time ago, you'd never get the transparency that you get today to find those problems in the first place.
"Almost all civilizations have oral or written records of giants and dwarves (trust me, LOTR is not a new idea)."
Or, maybe we're all wired the same way and therefore tend to have the same dillusions, which then get processed and filtered differently culture-by-culture.
Assuming the Tivo box is in working order, you can sell it for at least the value of the lifetime subscription ($300), even if the box itself is near worthless.
"If it's something outside of my scope of expertise, then I will go to someone else."
Yet as soon as somebody goes to someone else for something out of their expertise (which you happen to be able to do yourself), you make a judgment call on that person. That is simple hypocrisy.

I'm from Mars.
So I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.
Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.
But trust me.... You don't.
I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you dont know what you are talking about.
This is how bad info gets passed around.
If you dont know about the topic....Dont make yourself sound like you do.
Cuz some Slashdotters belive anything they hear.

Hmm...that's thinking different!
Except if I take the iPod with me somewhere, what will the dock use for its recording medium?

Feel free to interchange "gun manufacturers" with "automobile manufacturers" or "producers of alcoholic beverages."
Because the seeing a real, live person is better than some fat, sweaty, 40-year old guy typing (*)(*) to you....so I hear.
Displaying a simple animated wire image used to require a computer the size of a tennis court. It will happen soon enough.
No, "Pancake Bunny"
"Google is a publicly traded company. They by law has to maximize the profits for their shareholders."
By law, they have to follow the terms of their corporate charter.

You're *obviously* not an audiophile, are you? Now excuse my while I go plug in my stereo with this new $1,500 power cord.
Any links to which you can point us? I would like to buy something like that!

They were placed there through the grace of His Noodly Appendage to test our faith, duh!

Would you care to itemize that $250? I have not been able to price anything that is quiet and unobtrusive for such a low price.
Some of us can, others cannot. Some can, but also choose not to. /. hasn't been a pure technology site for a long time.
"I was under the assumption that most of us here have built and designed electronic equipment from scratch before moving onto PCs..."
To use an old cliche: "You must be new here!"

Having to make a contract with a third party in order to use something you bought from another party is an immoral practice in the first place.
