I think I have to disagree. Most of the better gigabit nics out there support PXE boot. Get a small boot loader image going. If these will all be on the same lan segment, at boot time it will grab the latest loader image, boot the small loader (~2MB). The loader can then boot the full OS image.

You can then just capture or encapsulate the computing session to an image file. It's not a full virtualized environment, as you still get the benefits of the cpu horsepower at the workstation, but if corruption occurs ou just roll back the session file. I think.

This is how Windows hibernation functions in a nutshell, just dumps RAM to a file I think. I haven't tried this in practice, but it should work.

Too bad at least one of them is in a long term deal with my other partners, and alienating them would alienate my partners as well, so I have to endure. Yup. I've learned over time however that hard and fast rules have rarely won over anyone for anything. Compassion for the needs of others and a desire to do right will however often win out. It sounds to me as though the person has taken every reasonable recourse, and if he has in fact approached the neighbor directly with a kind disposition and that has failed, has approached law enforcement, and that has failed, a mild bending of the rules and a "what he doesn't know won't hurt him" attitude probably isn't the worst approach.

Bash me if you like, but unless you can suggest a better course of action than "return fire!", I would appreciate a bit more levity. I'm not heartless here.

Well, being a business owner, I ALMOST agree with the GP. Sometimes this isn't an option because of contracts or other outstanding agreements, but it seems like I attract customers that are never happy, no matter what you do for them. Example - I have a nameless client that I agreed to complete a project with 10 hours of labor with very specific terms. I have now sunk in 30 hours of labor, it's gone way out of scope, they refuse to pay overage, and the project still isn't done.

Now what do you do? The project is at a halt, I can't in good conscience put more hours over there in, AND they expect us to support their entire network environment for free. It's just not going to happen. I'm very close to referring them to the competition and telling them to have a nice day. Now, word of mouth *would* hurt in this situation, but then again, which is worse? A little bad publicity, or the day to day headaches of dealing with someone like this? I'm not going to be as flippant about it as the GP, but sometimes, it's the only way to go...

Consider for a moment what the poster said - it's well out of his hearing range. So...2 am, wear earplugs. Go over to the unit, if you can, simply short one of the wires running to the speakers. If that's unreasonable, a few drops of super-glue down into the cone of the unit might just do the trick.

The power light still comes on, the old man feels more safe, and the rest of the neighborhood has peace. Win-win.

If you happen to be in the midwest, here in St. Louis we have a vendor that buys huge lots of hardware from companies that go under. As a result I managed to pick up a a Color Laserjet 4550n with full toner and JetDirect card for about $300. :D I'm not a salesperson for them, but you get awesome pricing on used stuff, like $100 for a rack. They're EPC around here, in St. Charles, MO in fact. They have a website, http://www.pconramp.com./

Maybe they'll give me some free stuff for mentioning them? :P They don't have the better stuff out front, the real goodies are in back. They tend to cater to businesses more than individuals (perhaps why I get such good pricing?), but still it's worth a look.

The moral of the story is that if you don't require new, look at used. Also, be forewarned: my 4550n is awesome, however it takes FOREVER to warm up, calibrate, and print. It also likes to make background noise. A LOT OF IT. If it weren't in my office and a common and acceptable thing, I think I would go insane.

  17. Re:Indeed, Sun's list prices are way too high on Sun Unveils Thumper Data Storage · · Score: 1

I think the problem here is the rule of diminishing returns. There are very few people that would be able to garner full benefit of this configuration. There are large corporations that could, sure, and perhaps a few years down the road individuals would as well.

Another diminishing return is the benefit of cramming that many drives into 4u of space. I've recently had the benefit of trying out ATA over Ethernet and a company named Coraid sells what they call an SR1520. It's a 15 drive unit with a SATA backplane that fits into 3u, and then you can either buy their little 1u debian box (CLN20) to act as a NAS or BYO. That's 4u with 15 drives, decent performance, and the cost of buying from then runs ~$8000 for a full setup, and you get 7.5TB of raw storage, and all you need is a layer 2 switch, no fiber channel to mess with, and it's not over IP.

You could build that same unit on your own if you felt like hacking it together for about $2000. The neat thing about ATA over Ethernet is that you use LVM2 and you can just keep slapping more AoE drives into the setup. So let's say you had the cash to toss around, you get 3 of these SR1520's, and you take up 9u instead of 4u, get the same storage benefits. Downside is that you eat up more rack space and the whole setup eats more power. Again, rule of diminishing returns...how much is that dollar to you vs. the rack space and power requirements involved?

I could see considering using this, but I would prefer that at very least the box run linux or freebsd to keep our environment uniform. Adding yet another *nix to the mix adds another layer of management responsibility I'd like to avoid. (No flame wars, please.)

    Also, section 40.1:
