  1. Re:Firewire Mixer on Capturing Multi-Track Raw Audio? · · Score: 2, Informative

Yeah Dude! Way too catious! You've got an .mac address, so I assume your using a mac. No drivers involved. OS X just recognized it as an audio device I can use for whatever. For software, I'm currently using Logic Express, though Garage Band works great as well. I'm definetly getting my vaule out of this in 3-5 years. Its a standalone mixer so its worth the money right there.

I stayed away from ProTools because I didn't want to be locked into one suite of software for recording, as nice as it is. Nothing is future proof, just do your research and figure out what you need and buy that. This thing was $500 so I use it for a couple of shows and its paid itself off.

The Phonic Helix Firewire 18. It sends the signal pre any EQ or mixer, the only control is the gain. Up to 16 Channels into your computer. Works like a charm, and the price is great for what you are getting. I picked mine up for a little over $500 (Canadian) and it also functions as a standalone mixer.

I'd post a link to some tunes that we've recorded with it, but they are not ready for general consumption yet. You can check out some of our previous stuff at http://www.tractorgrease.com/main/thedirt/

  4. Why fight 'em, join 'em on Band Invites Music Copying · · Score: 4, Insightful

You're music is going to get copied no matter what. All attempts to prevent consumers from making copies of CDs are bound to fail. There will always be a work around.

Instead, what bands should be doing is embracing the ease that they can get their material out there. You no longer have to beg and plead with radio stations or record companies. My band, The Dirt (shameless plug http://www.tractorgrease.com/) is taking that approach. You put a lot of time in recording your self and mixing/mastering tracks and then just give away your music? Well that's the reality of it if you want people to listen, especially as a new band.

People need to feel like fans, not criminals when they try to get music from their favorite bands.

I also have a small area to setup a rackmount of some sort but I do not have rackmountable computers. My servers are just old desktop machines. There is only two to mount, but I can see that I will be getting more in the future.

I would be more interested in how to build an adapter of some sort to allow a regular computer case to be mounted in a rack. Currently I just have the computers sitting on a cheap wooden shelf in the closet but a rack in the closet would just be cool.

Apparently not.....must be American, but I digress. ;-)

Canada is one of the most connected nations. We have one of the highest percentages of connected households in the world. (Reference here) Along with that, we are one of the highest users of kazaa and other file-sharing programs.

This may be a solution though to the copyright fiasco. Surcharge the media and the ISPs. Then use this money to pay artists and content creators and then make the content available on the internet free. You could download music and movies without feeling like a criminal or that the artists aren't getting paid. My only fear is that the money will get lost in government books.
