Yeah Dude! Way too catious! You've got an.mac address, so I assume your using a mac. No drivers involved. OS X just recognized it as an audio device I can use for whatever. For software, I'm currently using Logic Express, though Garage Band works great as well. I'm definetly getting my vaule out of this in 3-5 years. Its a standalone mixer so its worth the money right there.
I stayed away from ProTools because I didn't want to be locked into one suite of software for recording, as nice as it is. Nothing is future proof, just do your research and figure out what you need and buy that. This thing was $500 so I use it for a couple of shows and its paid itself off.
The Phonic Helix Firewire 18. It sends the signal pre any EQ or mixer, the only control is the gain. Up to 16 Channels into your computer. Works like a charm, and the price is great for what you are getting. I picked mine up for a little over $500 (Canadian) and it also functions as a standalone mixer.
I'd post a link to some tunes that we've recorded with it, but they are not ready for general consumption yet. You can check out some of our previous stuff at http://www.tractorgrease.com/main/thedirt/
You're music is going to get copied no matter what. All attempts to prevent consumers from making copies of CDs are bound to fail. There will always be a work around.
Instead, what bands should be doing is embracing the ease that they can get their material out there. You no longer have to beg and plead with radio stations or record companies. My band, The Dirt (shameless plug http://www.tractorgrease.com/) is taking that approach. You put a lot of time in recording your self and mixing/mastering tracks and then just give away your music? Well that's the reality of it if you want people to listen, especially as a new band.
People need to feel like fans, not criminals when they try to get music from their favorite bands.
BBC or CBC. http://www.cbc.ca/ is actively embracing open standards. They have an OGG stream they are testing out, give instructions for user of Mac or *NIX and link to Mplayer.
All the "thoughts" that I've seen thus far here about what Tivo is up to amount to a TV tuner card. Come on/. Think outside the box a bit. Maybe they're getting into the content delivery game. Downloadable episodes!!
I also have a small area to setup a rackmount of some sort but I do not have rackmountable computers. My servers are just old desktop machines. There is only two to mount, but I can see that I will be getting more in the future.
I would be more interested in how to build an adapter of some sort to allow a regular computer case to be mounted in a rack. Currently I just have the computers sitting on a cheap wooden shelf in the closet but a rack in the closet would just be cool.
I don't know anything about Canadian Law, or Canadian internet/music habits
Apparently not.....must be American, but I digress.;-)
Canada is one of the most connected nations. We have one of the highest percentages of connected households in the world. (Reference here)
Along with that, we are one of the highest users of kazaa and other file-sharing programs.
This may be a solution though to the copyright fiasco. Surcharge the media and the ISPs. Then use this money to pay artists and content creators and then make the content available on the internet free. You could download music and movies without feeling like a criminal or that the artists aren't getting paid. My only fear is that the money will get lost in government books.
Here's the goods though.......from the EULA (its been awhile since I've read through one....Yikes!!)
The Service and any necessary software used in connection with the Service ("Software") contain proprietary and confidential information that is protected by applicable intellectual property and other laws. Yahoo grants you a personal, non-transferable and non-exclusive right and license to use the object code of the Software on a single computer; provided that you do not (and do not allow any third party to) copy, modify, create a derivative work of, reverse engineer, reverse assemble or otherwise attempt to discover any source code, sell, assign, sublicense, grant a security interest in or otherwise transfer any right in the Software.
That's called "Throw Down" for any third party, open source effort!!
We have just taken down one of our servers that is an IBM RISC System/6000 F30 PowerPC that we're not sure what to do with. It had AIX on it, but I'll be very interested on other things that could be done with this old iron.
From the release notes: * IDE drives may not work on x86. Try it, if it doesn't work, it's a
known problem.
That seems like a pretty major problem to me.....

This is the piece that I just picked up and I can't tell you how happy with it I am so far.

Billy Holiday, Rosanne Cash, Louis Armstring, Frank Sinatra. Why are these CD's getting the rootkiit treatment? I'm drawing a blank here....

Maybe wait for some verification prior to moding up. I've tested, no go, and apparently a few others have tested it with Konq.....no go!

I mapped out a route from Here to Timbuktu and Mapquest came out with the shortest route, therefore I conclude that Mapquest is better. QED
Cause a court order may not be able to shut the site down, but I'm sure a slashdotting will do the job!

The question is, do you really think we'll be notified if there is an asteroid that has a 99% chance of earth collision? I think not......
Along with Mars day or what?
Lawyer speak is so great. Where else, besides an Eminem rant, would you hear such a string of words as: (empasis added by poster)
ever had, could have had, now has or hereafter can, shall or may have
That sounds like an Eminem lyric to me.......bitch.
What the hell is happening to slashdot??
English : "The spirit is strong, but the flesh is weak"
Tranlator - English -> Russian
Russian : "The vodka is good, but the meat is rotten"
Automatic translation is a classic AI problem. Shouldn't there have to be a "working" prototype prior to issueing the patent??
These are English students.......write new functions???
And digital media is everywhere. "Suspicious Minds" greets you in full-home surround sound.
And isn't that ironic......don't ya think.
I'm really surprised to not find Orson Well's War of the Worlds in the top 20 anyways. That has to be one of the best hoaxes ever! War of the Worlds
I don't think they need to even post when he's got a new article, I think most /.'s are on the Cringley mailing list!
.....*shudder*
You mean shutter......
Actually its an F30 if that makes a difference.
