The real question is: if you had $101 million in the bank right now and only made $60k/year in your tech job, would you do it? As tempting as it may be, I wouldn't. You could take that $101 million and turn it into $200 million over the course of a few years and be so much more secure. As well, you could start donating the interest to charities, and do a million other things with it as well. Even develop your own launch system and go into LEO for $10 million or something.

A 300 lb gorilla is actually a small gorilla. Adult male gorillas are typically from 320 lb to 360 lb in weight. I believe your metaphor would have had more meaning if you had said "500 lb gorilla" or "900 lb gorilla", because those would be extremely large and powerful gorillas that would stomp on the other weaker ones (like you were trying to characterize Microsoft). The 300 lb gorilla would likely be beat up by other larger gorillas.

While your point might seem valid, it is invalidated by the fact that Dell has sold WinXP Home, WinXP Pro, and Win2k machines at the same time. Whatever field holds the OS specification during production, they simply need to add one more option: none. They still pass through the hardware testing station, but at the OS station they skip right through.

You know what's funny? Go to the ESRB site and do an advanced search to find all the games rated AO. There are only 19 titles that come up, and of those there are only really 2 legitimate "games":

    GTA:SA
Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude Uncut and Uncensored

Most of the rest are by two publishers named "Peach Princess" and "MacDaddy Entertainment". And their titles include such greats as:

    Water Closet: The Forbidden Chamber
    X-Change
    All Nude Glamour
    Cyber Photographer

My point? Gimme a break, the only titles any normal person would ever consider spending money on are GTA and LSL. The rest of the crap in this AO category is off the deep end. GTA may be rough around the edges and not the morally brightest game around, but it doesn't deserve to be cast away with the rest of these freaks.

While your situation is a bit more serious than mine, I used to encounter the same thing. I would like to sleep in for an extra couple hours on the weekend to catch up on sleep. Normally I would get up at 6:30 am, but on the weekends I might sleep in until 9:00 am or 10:00 am. I think the telemarketers can't call before 8:00 am, so sometime around 8:30 am or 8:45 am I would get a call and have to haul my sleep-deprived ass out of bad to get the phone. Some times I would unplug it the night before, but I wouldn't always remember. Even still, this was back when I was living with my parents, and the other 10 phones in the house would ring as well. The thing that pissed me off the most was the calls that you would answer and all you would hear were clicks or something. Basically it was a computer calling to see if anyone would answer so they could collect the number and sell it to telemarketers.

Once I moved out I kept my cell phone and that was it, haven't had a land line since. I don't recall the last telemarketing call I got on this cell phone (if any) and I've had the same number for 4 or 5 years (since they instituted the law that you could keep and transfer your mobile number).

These robots would be all fine and dandy, until you consider that the average depth of the Atlantic is around 10,000 feet and the average depth of the Pacific is 13,000 feet. Robot subs to survive depths at 20,000 feet or greater would ne unnecessary. However, Las Angeles class attack submarines are rated down to only 2,000 feet. So robot subs could easily improve upon that. The problem would be commanding the robot subs. At any depth below a 100 feet (or even less), you can't effectively use any currently available communications technology. So the subs would have to be highly autonomous and have entire algorithms built for engaging targets. One false move and suddenly the robot is dead, or it accidently blows up a merchant ship on the surface.

And I'm sure there is no way in hell we would ever convert our nuclear missile subs to autonomous vehicles. One glitch and China no longer exists.

  18. Re:Hopefully the guy was innocent. on Using Google Maps to Get Out of a Traffic Ticket · · Score: 1

    Doesn't always work that way.

I got a minor ticket (like $130 and less than 2 points). It was a moving violation that was not related to speeding or anything. The cop must have had a vendetta for me or something. The first court date was 3 months after the ticket and the cop showed up. I was his only case that day. There were other cops who had like 3 cases and didn't show up: all those people got to walk free. I argued my side well and was able to get the judge to doubt the situation the cop presented (he spoke words along those lines). Yet, he ended up siding with the cop because he said "I was not there, so I have to trust the officer's judgement of the situation" ... despite me arguing points that proved the cop was unsure of what happened (the cop explained that I was in the left lane when I was actually in the right lane, etc - he did not have the facts straight).

So I contested for a second trial ... like another 2 or 3 months later. The cop shows up again - I am his only case that day as well, and this isn't traffic court anymore. The first time was traffic court, this time around I am in the court room with prisoners accused of assault charges, theft, etc. So I start talking to the prosecutor to see what we can negotiate, and the cop can't even remember the circumstances of the ticket. He didn't even remember where it had happened. So I went ahead and explained everything to him and why the situation he presented was doubtful (the cop seemed a bit slow, heh). In the end he still wasn't sure of what had happened or why he made his final decision, but he just stuck to his guns anyhow.

I decided to negotiate with the prosecutor down to "impeding the flow of traffic", the lowest violation possible that meant no points but $130 in fines and court costs.

That cop was an ass. He even threatened to arrest me when he was giving me the ticket because I was asking so many questions and not leaving down the road (this was my first ticket ever in my 7 years of driving).

In the end it was better to spend the time than to have points on my license. But for any small ticket (less than 20 over or something) if you fight it long enough you can probably get it to "impeding" at the very least.

The simple fact is: you know what goes on down there ... you don't want to talk about what goes on down there ... so give her whatever the hell she wants to deal with it. Now, which name brand probably depends entirely on the ads you've seen, and how good the box they come in looks. Nevermind that your gf actually prefers the feel of the generic store-brand.
