Very well put. And I will add: when I can read them confortably in bed and not worry if I fall asleep on top of them.
When you can use them with an indirect source of light. Having a screen next to your face as the only light source can put a pretty heavy strain in your eyes.
A not-so-bright thief could have plugged it into the campus network. Universities have total control of their networks, and if they happen to know the MAC address of the stolen machine, its easy to pinpoint
Most thief aren't too bright. But they usually don't steal laptops (or whatever else they steal, except money) to use it themselves. My guess is they usually unload them to a fence who will probably route it to someone who "moves" this kind of merchandise. This someone is probably someone who knows enough to erase the HDD and get rid of other tracable info (serial numbers, etc). Then he will sell it claiming that it "fell of a truck, really".
In this case, the thief sold the laptop herself. Amateurs. That's a sign of the times for you...;-)
I'd settle for a better IIS-FTP component, the one in IIS 6 is a bit of a joke.
Heck, yeah. I don't even bother with it anymore and I usually go with a third party program for my ftp needs.
But I wish IIS would allow me to authenticate against an external user database instead of the system's or AD.
Other than that, I have no complains about Windows 2003/IIS 6. I also run Apache 2 on Linux and Apache 1.3 on Solaris. I don't see much of a difference in stability. Apache1.3/Solaris are a bit behind in performance but that's because they are running on a *really* old Sun machine.
Memo to games.net: I know that times are tough and you fund yourself with the revenues you get from ads. But making me go thru a a full page ad every time I click on a link is annoying to no end.
I'm not saying that I won't visit your site again, but I'll think twice before clicking on another games.net link.
Makes you wonder what the women who make 3d models and textures think of all this. They don't seem to care, at least in Team Ninja's case.
We don't know if they care or not. They knew the target audience of the game and designed accordingly. They might have not given a flying fsck or they might have been outraged at the idea. In the end, they created a hot selling game.
On average, men prefer slim women with D-sized breasts. Women prefer guys with musculature. Looking at ads and movies just proves the point.
True. Most games are, however, designed with men in mind while just giving a passing glance at women's interest. Even games that are supposed to be played by both.
Example: World of Warcraft. Male chars are the "badass looking/big biceps/rippled abs" kind of musculature. IMHO, that is clearly targeted at men (who wouldn't want to look like that?). Take a look at a soap opera or "chick flick" ad and you'll see a very different kind of "muscle man".
Do women like to see themselves the way their avatar looks? Or are those chars simply designed because men prefer slim women with D-sized breast?
But seriously, I love Sun hardware. That thing takes a beating and keeps on ticking. The old e220r and e240r have never given me trouble (*knock on wood*)
But Dells are really cheap. I was told (candidly) by an IBM vendor that they just can't compete with Dell in the inexpensive server market. And I suppose that neither can Sun.
I have plenty of Dell servers also, and I've never had a major problem with them. The 24 hours support contract gets you replacement parts really quick. But I keep a couple of hot-spares machines just in case one of them decides to go down in a big way.
The only complain I have with Dell support is when they try to walk you thru their support script even when you have identified the problem and is rather obvious that a replacement is needed. ("Yes, the hard drive is making grinding noises and smoke is coming out of it... why do you need me to run the diagnostics program?")
Notice how it was rated "interesting" and not "informative". The mods obviously found it interesting, which is going to be a subjective rating no matter what.
Actually, I'm wondering why did they choose those applications. Does their software only support Apache as web server and Oracle as database? If so, then it makes sense to change the OS, but why did they go with Windows in the first place?
Does the software support any webserver/database? Then why did they go with Apache/Oracle?
In either case, it looks like they (or their contractor) simply didn't do their research. Personally, I never had an issue running apache on Windows, altho I use it to serve static pages for an internal application.
BTW, whoever mod'd you as Troll needs to get his/her/its head checked.
An IBM Consultant could tell you better what a "solution" entails.
That's one of the funniest sites I've seen in recent memory. I think I'm gonna change my title to "Vision Guidance Leader", and stiff Huh? Corp on the royalties.
and it is at it's heart just another game of "grind to spend time"
I love Warcraft and I wish what you said wasn't so, but as I approach "end game" levels, it becomes more and more of a grind. "Gotta do one more dungeon run to get xx piece of equipment to complete my set". And this dungeon run will be just like every other run except for the items that drop. And my item might not drop. And I'll have to compete with others for it... Same goes for the keys to Onyxia...
1. IBM Thinkpad. Couple of years old. No power brick (I'm too lazy to unplug it) 2. Membership card for a long dead video club 3. Spare car keys. I lock myself out of my car every couple of weeks or so. 4. Bloody knife I forgot to dump the last hit. 5. One.45 caliber automatic with 2 boxes of ammunition 6. Four days concentrated emergency rations 7. One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills 8. One miniature combination russian phrase book and bible 7. One hundred dollars in rubles 8. One hundred dollars in gold 9. Nine packs of chewing gum 10. One issue of prophylactics 11. Three lipsticks 12. Three pair of nylon stockings.
At least it doesn't start with "free", i'm rather tired of that.
I'll see your sentiment and raise:
-- At least it's not called "something is not something". Acronym: "Sins".
-- At least it's not called "Just another something" (YAS?, JAS?)
If they couldn't use Mambo, they should have chosen a similar name: Merengue, Cumbia, Cha-cha-cha. Latin dances have such cute names. And they can always think of a meaning for the acronym after the fact.
If you use Media Player to view your videos, disable the option to execute embedded scripts and download new licenses. That should take care of your pop-up/licensing problems.
Or, use Media Player Classic. Pretty cool, tho some avi clips crash it.
And by football, I mean soccer. -that- takes some skill
And *a lot* of breath. Running up and down the stadium for 90+ minutes (nobody is ever sure when the ref is going to signal the end) and not stoping for anything short of a broken leg or death.
Like baseball, it's a very fun game to play, but not so fun to watch (imho). At least not when you are sober.
On the other hand, there's boxing. Extremely fun to watch (if the fight is any good), not fun at all to play.
As for NFL games, I don't care for them. They are not fast paced enough for me to watch and quite frankly, watching a bunch of 250+ pound men bumping against each other is not my idea of fun either.
But could Madden '06 problem be that it's not that different from all the Madden games before it? Except maybe for the names of the players?
GGP makes a statement. Thin skinned GP take offense at what he obviously believe to be an attack on the U.S. and P spouts inane trolling crap.
And here I am answering for some reason to that crap.
I'm not the GGP but I'll take the liberty to re-phrase what he said:
"A lot of people have been murdered for less than $3000 in almost every country in the world."
There. I believe it's still faithful to the spirit of GGP's post which was something like:
"The man wasn't killed just for an imaginary object in an imaginary world. That object had a value of about $3000 and that is why he died."
Disclaimer: I'm not american nor I live in the U.S. I don't hate America, tho I probably hate a few americans. I also hate people in several countries in all continents. I'm probably a very spiteful person. A country is an abstraction. I can't hate a country any more that I can hate the color blue. But that's just me.
Actually, I believe the grandparent wasn't talking about the googlefs that Google uses on it's backend. He was probably using the term in a "generic" way to mean whatever fs that would store data on Google instead of locally.

ewww, you use EXT3? Why punish yourself? Try Reiser, XFS, or JFS.
I'm not trying to start a flamefest, but it seems that for everyone that says "ewww, you use EXT3" there is one that says "ewww, Reiser is teh suck!".
How does tivo records it's data, anyway? Some custom filesystem?

Benchmark studies prove that Dell sucks
Shit, I'm sold.

That must be because you've never seen Swordfish, you lucky bastard...
;-)
Hey, that movie had a couple of saving graces, if you know what I mean
Hackers on the other hand, featured a fully clothed Angelina Jolie and scenes that made Jurassic Park's "this is unix..." scene look quite realistic.
Troll. Do your own research, google is avalible to you, do a search on "Richard Roby"

Ok... let's see: http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/playe
Whoa! I hope this incident doesn't intefere with his NBA draft!

WM is bundled with XP, and is hard to kill
Odd, I always uninstall it using the Add/Remove program applet in the control panel. It's one of windows components and is *very* easily removed.
As for winpopup, I don't uninstall it. I simply set it to "disabled" in the services control panel applet.
An IBM Consultant could tell you better what a "solution" entails.

BTW... my PC will still run PC games from 1995 as well as brand new titles... name a console that can do THAT
Does the Gameboy count as a console?
Yeah, I saw Dr. Strangelove too. Credit where credit's due.
My bad. But in my defense, I wasn't expecting somebody not to get the reference. It's not exactly an obscure film.
At least "shepmaster" came up with the Vegas line, which was the funnier response in this case.
Since everyone is doing it, I'll list mine too:
.45 caliber automatic with 2 boxes of ammunition
1. IBM Thinkpad. Couple of years old. No power brick (I'm too lazy to unplug it)
2. Membership card for a long dead video club
3. Spare car keys. I lock myself out of my car every couple of weeks or so.
4. Bloody knife I forgot to dump the last hit.

AppleWorks had no idea what to do with AppleWorks documents - assuming you can get a mac to read an Apple ][ floppy in the first place...
Perhaps it wasn't carefully saved after all...

Does anybody know what is the age of consent for barnyard animals?
No reason, just asking.
That'd be "Luna Park". The happiest place orbiting earth.
And the trolling and flamebait never ends.
