In fact...let's use people's FEARS against them! After all, if you make people scared, you can control them!

The republican party of today makes me want to puke! Even their own conservative members are sick of them!

Did any of you notice how they began trashing Edwards mere minutes after Kerry asked him to be VP? Their campaign has been 100% negative. What really made me laugh though was two things that Bush said: The first one was to chide Edwards about his lack of International experience. Seems to me that he has more then BUSH HAD when he was running for President! The second thing was about his comments comparing Edwards with Cheney. Bush said Cheney was ready to be "a heartbeat away from the Presidency". If I had been THAT reporter, I would have followed up with: "Well, at least Edwards' heart BEATS properly"!! Seriously though, shouldn't Cheney's constant heart problems, angioplasties, etc. be an issue?

Software piracy in these countries is NOT done with p2p programs, it's done with CD's and DVD's! The reason piracy is so rampant there is that the burners and medium has become really cheap! Not to mention that with hardware costs dropping in these countries, more people have access to computers, all of which need software to run.

The one BIG FLAW in all these arguements is this: How many of the people who steal software/music/movies would have actually bought it/them?

Until this question is accurately answered (hint: it's not even CLOSE to 100% as the BSA, RIAA and MPA would have you believe), the debate on p2p will always be an invalid one, and the laws proposed and/or passed to "protect chldren" from the rampant dangers of copyright infringement will always be suspect.

    Dear Senator Hatch:

I saw that you wish to make all P2P applications illegal. Indeed, your quote said: "It is illegal and immoral to induce or encourage children to commit crimes,"

I have a request, Senator Hatch. Instead of making software programs, illegal can we make GUNS illegal? After all, it's been proven time after time that guns: "Induce or encourage children to kill each other" (my quote). To me, keeping kids alive is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT then keeping them from downloading the latest Britney Spears single off the Internet! Of course, I suppose if you let kids kill each other, then they can't download things - Right?

Perhaps this is your logic in trying to 'protect' kids from the wrath of the RIAA, while supporting the guns that they use to kill each other. If this is indeed the case, then perhaps you should encourage the RIAA and MPAA to distribute guns to children.

Of course, what I've just typed is 100% absurd, but no more so then your proposal to make p2p programs illegal. Not only is your proposed law absurd, but it also is quite likely unconstitutional. See, we have a Supreme Court in this country, which in the "Betamax" decision many years ago declared that techology that can be used for both illegal and legal puproses cannot be banned. Again, the MPAA was fighting Sony in this case to stop the VCR from existing. Ironically, the VCR (via movie rentals on tape) became one of their biggest profit centers.

Of course, if you're truly hell bent on shredding everyone's Constitutional rights, while you're at it, it would help the book industry by banning the copier, scanner and laser printer. This would also keep children (and adults) from breaking the law.

OH...and let's also make alcohol illegal (again!). That will discourage childern from drinking (and driving!).

Mr. Hatch, what I mainly want from my government is to keep me safe from enemies, foreign and domestic. That's it. I don't WANT you to be my nanny, nor do I want you to insert yourself into how I raise my children! Since you all seem to be doing a lousy job of keeping us safe from enemies, why not make that job #1 instead of wasting time keeping childern safe one MP3 at a time?

  22. This is nothing new.... on FCC Move Could Shut Down High School Radio Station · · Score: 1

Class D FM stations were basically put out of business in 1980. Except in Alaska, the FCC doesn't allow new ones. Most of the class D stations converted to class A status (minimum power of 100 watts or equilavent coverage thereof) back in the mid 1908's. Some moved into the commercial band as secondary stations and one or two moved to a new FM frequency, 87.9 FM. These secondary stations can be displaced by any other station except another class D, a translator or an LPFM. And, yes more then a few were forced off the air as well.... Fortunately, as mentioned above, class D stations till have priority over translators, and this station can bump an existing translator off the air and take their frequency over if they want. They also have priority over LPFM stations. Their other possibility is to find a frequency in the reserved band where they can run 100 watts. Practically speaking, this isn't really that difficult, as you only need run the 100 watts in one direction. I know of several college FM stations on the east coast that beam a very narrow 100 watt signal straight out to sea, while running class D power in every other direction. Also, the FCC allows these stations to use "off the shelf" directional antennas made by companies like Scala and Winegard that only cost a couple hundred bucks (as opposed to a multi-thousand dollar directions that a commerical broadcaster would use). Finally, the FM band in Seattle isn't nearly as crowded as you might think; I have two rulemakings for new 6000 watt commerical stations pending in the Seattle area right now. And, when I read the report and order, the FCC said that they had found several alternate channels where this station could move to. Since it's on an island, and any interference occurring over salt water can be ignored, I'd wager that there's perhaps half a dozen places it can move to. I might even fire up my copy of RF Investigator and check it out for myself. This station should consider itself lucky, at least there are places where it can move to. I know of one class D community station in the Boston area that signed on in 1959, only to be displaced in 1990 by the third NPR station for Boston. With no place to move, they are only a memory today, leaving their town with no local radio service whatsoever.
