Do you really think that politicians are going to pass laws that take money AWAY from them? Get real. These clowns passed the laws ALLOWING this virtual bribery in the first place. Maybe a pol gets into office with the best of intentions, but they quickly discover graft..and it goes downhill from there. Personally, Gray Davis is the biggest disappointment here. Look at the choice I have in November for governor: Davis (a democrat and a crook) or Simon (a republican and a crook). If a state of over 35 million people can't do any better then these two clowns, why even bother to vote?

When you ask for a real person believe it or not, claire argues with you! I have discovered that she does understand the work 'fuck' however (as in "give me a fucking person, claire"). 18. SEE..right from the article: on Why You Don't Have a Broadband Connection · · Score: 2

According to the Telecommunications Act of 1996, telecommunications services have to grant open access to their facilities, but information services do not. By defining telephone broadband as an information service--a designation originally intended for content providers like LexisNexis--the FCC removed it from regulation, allowing the Baby Bells to ban other ISPs from transmitting over their lines. The next month Powell struck again--getting his majority to declare that cable-based broadband was "an interstate information service" and not either a "telecommunication service" or a "cable service." Here again, by defining cable broadband as an information rather than a telecommunication service, Powell permitted cable to ban other providers from using their lines. Moreover, by defining cable as an "interstate" information service rather than a "cable service," he removed it from any local regulation over prices and service. I rest my case....

  19. Ahh..but the FCC determined on Why You Don't Have a Broadband Connection · · Score: 2

The FCC determined that the Internet wasn't a 'telecommunications service' hence the Comm. Act of 1996 doesn't apply to it. They've already cut back cable TV's requirement to allow competing ISP's onto the cable...and Chairman Powell came out with a statement that ILEC's "can do the best job of providing broadband". I guess that the Qwest/MSN alliance can give me the best broadband experience? Let me clue you in: I had it and it simply sucked! The CLEC'S well know that things are tenuous for them....trust me..I know my DSL ISP and they're bummed that the FCC is probably going to leave them out in the cold..and they do a great job, too! As far as my land grab statement: The Comm Act of 1996 also deregulated Radio and TV allowing companies like Clear Channel to happen.

  20. That's riiiight... on Why You Don't Have a Broadband Connection · · Score: 2

And guess what? The FCC is not only allowing them to do this, they're actually encouraging it!
Why? Well, it seems that a couple of months ago, the FCC determined that the Communications Act of 1996 doesn't apply to the Internet. Remember all that bullshit about Clinton using the 'net to digitally 'sign' said act? Remember him saying how this act was going to revolutionize the 'net? Not any more. It turns out that the act was just a big land grab for companies like Clear Channel Communications and CBS.

  21. What I noticed on Why VHS Was Better · · Score: 2

Was that in the '80's the Beta/VHS battle was more of an east coast/west coast thing..with the east firmly in the VHS camp and the west going for beta. Betamax was always a superior format picture wise too...proof of this is the fact that Betacam always outsold (and continues to outsell) the M format in broadcast/pro use. The beta/VHS battle is a model for marketing.,.in that the technically superior format lost to the better marketed one...

For what I do (web browsing, word processing, email, simple games like Tetris and listening to streams and MP3's) it works great! Why would I want to buy one of these? I'd much rather take a trip to Hawaii with my honey then blow a couple of grand on a Pentium 4 computer. Besides, let's get real...in about three months this will be obsolete...replaced by the newest whiz bang 3.0 GHZ processor that works about 7% faster then this one does. I think I'll wait until a real reason comes along to justify my spending a lot of $$ on a processor this powerful. For what I do, I simply don't need this much power. Do you?

Their only option was to align with a big player like Real...who could afford the CARP stuff. Only the big players will be left standing....this is the way that the RIAA wants things and we all know that we (they?) have the best government that money can BUY! It's sad to see the 'net prostituted like they're doing to it. It had real promise as everyman's nirvana, but big business in concert with the politicians they've bought and paid for are ruining it. In many ways the early 2000 era U.S. government is worse then the late 1900's government of the Soviet Union. At least the soviets knew that their govt. was corrupt. The U.S. citizens still believe the bullshit that's being told them.

  25. I worked in TV..... on How Could TV Survive Without Commercials? · · Score: 2

The model I think works best is the subscription model like the BBC and other countries use. This could be used in combination with other revenue models. Look what's happening to radio for example. XM anf Sirius are beginning to make it. Also look at all the original programming on HBO and the other subscription networks (The Sopranos, etc.). This programming is also beginning to find its audience.
