Nowdays with the advent of keyboards and printers, modern students are forgetting what it means to write. After years and years of typing on keyboards, I wonder how many of you fellow slashdotters have legible handwriting.

  19. Khipu Processors on Incas Used Binary? · · Score: 2, Funny

It interesting to note that the khipu is only the medium for storing the data.

It would be even more interesting if a 'khipu processor' was found. By khipu processor I mean something you feed the knots to, to get work done.

Of course it might be argued that lamas can still up to this day 'process' kiphus and get work done, but that's not exactly what I mean.

Also if such a thing existed it's speed would be measured in knots per second, Mega knots per second, Giga knots per second, BogoKnots?
What about a knot co processor or multi knot threading?

Maybe knot, but what do I know?

  21. Distributed Computing service on Distributed Computing Attacking SARS · · Score: 1

Few days ago I was thinking if it would be possible to have a service (UDP?) that one could use for distribited processing. The idea is that of a protocol that permits one to upload chunks of data and the operations you want done on the data..... and after processing the service returns the result. Part of the protocol would be advertising the service to those who need it (after setting appropriate premissions/rules) One could also allocate different precentages(during different times of the day etc.) of idle processing power to different distributed computing tasks. I have seen at least three DIFFERENT x@home programs..... if we're going to do some serious distributed computing it's about time there is a standard. I am not tech enough to propose such a thing myself to the world(e.g. RFC) so I'm just dropping off the idea.
