This is a great hack and it's nice we can get a cheap(er) Mini-like machine. However, this thing only has component and hdmi interfaces. Not everyone owns a tv with these connections. I consider myself a geek and tech-lover, but I only have composite(rca) on all my tv's.
Unless there is an ultra cheap convertor box somewhere, this isn't that great a deal.

I'll be the first to admit to be being an apple fanboy.
And I'm a true believer in having form AND function. However, this mouse is underwelming. Sure, it looks cool. But why do I have to 'squeeze' the sides? C'mon Apple. Give me some actual configurable buttons. Instead of 'Mighty Mouse', this looks more like "hey we finally woke up and realized everyone had two buttons, so we're playing catchup" mouse.
And no matter how cool the little 'revolutionary' trackball is, or how sexy it looks. I'm not going to spend $50 on ANY mouse.
"how far off is this technology from a holodeck type implementation?"
Years and years if not decades or centuries away. First of all, this is a 3d projection. You still can't walk around inside of it. There are no forcefields to give you tactile touch responces.
And of course we haven't found the Binars yet, so you can't fall in love with it.
Couldn't a thumbkeypad and laptop hard drive be hacked onto this thing with a hinge like the Sharp Zarus PDA's?
That would make a seriously kickass hack/pda for cheap.
I believe the PSP may become the Amiga of the 00's
Step 2: Complete all requirements.
Step 3: Wait for iPod to arrive.
Step 4: IMPORTANT, do NOT open box.
Step 5: Wait for video, or next gen iPod to begin shipping.
Step 6: Go to Apple store, tell sob story of how you got this as a gift the DAY before the video ipod came out, and you don't have the receipt, etc, etc.
Step 7: Exchange free iPod for free Video iPod.
Step 8: ebay
Step 9: Profit
Actually, yes. I've received products from them before.
I'm really looking forward to the DS for gaming. I thought the touchscreen was dumb until I actually took the time to play WarioWare. Nintendo may make kiddie-looking games... but they ALWAYS bring the gameplay.
The PSP, that's strictly for emulators. The games just don't do anything for me. I never even bought a PS2. They look pretty... but I just can't get into them. And that Damn controller sucks.
The DS is outselling the PSP in Japan, and other than hackability, there seems to be a lack of interest for in in the US (the PSP that is).
Will the new wireless router and capabilities will this be the nail in the PSP's coffin?
As a gamer, the PSP doesn't impress me...cause of the lack of good games. As a geek though, it's pretty sweet to have that screen for portable MAME.
You can get a PSP for free here:

Nintendo isn't even budging in the handheld market, and looks like they're learning from mistakes in the home console biz. I'm ready for a game revolution.
These things are too expensive, unless you get one for free (click my url).
Yes, the screen is beautiful, and you've got some good games coming. But it's pricey, it's got too many things thrown in. The DS and SP are more portable, better battery power, and large library of games.
I just don't see this thing making it....unless you can hook it up to a tv.
As someone else said, I also got in on it early and it worked for me.
Your personal info is important, and there are hundreds of scams, but some do not sell your info. And as for spam. How much productivity is lost in creating a free yahoo account and then never ever checking it again?
I won't try to refute any other argument. But as far as the spam goes. Yes, $300 iPod is well worth the 5 min. to set up an account to receive spam.
I see this as a good move. Integrating the DS wifi with the Revolution...game anywhere... much like a PDA cell phone becomes an extension of your personal computer.
What I see as a bad move is...we have Gameboy, DS, Gamecube, and now they keeping DS, adding Revolution, and Gameboy Evolution. Two portables and a new console..seems like flooding the market.
Anyway, click the linky and get a free DS and Free PSP
One word, Bart PE.... ok, one work and some abbreviation.
I love the iPod, I use mine all the time. But there is no need to falsely hype it up on merits that are not specific to it.
Wouldn't be great if Nintendo announced they were rereleasing the NES with a slightly faster CPU and more Ram. 8-Bit goodness. Everything truly good about gaming was done on a NES.
http://www.psps4free.com/default.aspx?r=286409
I'm getting into the whole TV recording/TIVO/DVR thing a bit late.
I realize that Myth TV will run on a Mac. But do I need a TV Tuner card? Or will Firewire Cable Box to Mac be just as good. Is there an advantage of one method to the other?
...personally, I'm saving for a portable Famicom from lik-sang.
I don't even have a PS2... there's nothing that really draws me to it...cept that new Contra game.
Mike Tyson's Punch Out fo' evah!!!!!!
The fact that Palm owns Be IP and is moving to Linux is great. But MS is dominating...
For the love of god give me a new Newton. I don't want a cellphone that does everything and includes the kitchen sink, yet has a small screen and wears out my thumbs.
I already have a laptop. But I need a PalmTOP... device.... and Apple has a golden opportunity here. *sigh*
An iBook can do almost all that a powerbook can for less dinero. And for the same price as a new powerbook you could get 3 mac mini's and cluster away.

I agree that's it's dirty for them to offer free downloadable content and then turn around and charge for the content on disc.
The problem there is not keeping their word.
However, I see no problem with selling a patch/update for a small $5.00 fee. I think that's great. Lots of people (myself included) don't have Live and have no intention of purchasing. Plus, if you download content that is only available via Live, and Live is a subscription service, then the content isn't really free is it? There's still a fee involved in aquiring it.
This is great for people who just want a particular game patch but don't want Live.
