Ya know... we got the viruses taking out computers, we got the highly specialized super-computers, and now we've got robots protecting military installations. None of that really bothered me until I realized my name was John.
You have seperate processors for graphics (geometry processing, T&L, etc), sound, networking, and device connectivity. Your computer is already like that. Eventually, the UI to your OS will be running on a specific piece of hardware.

Just a thought: Become good with Photoshop, you can make a living (or at least augment it, career dependent of course) with it. In a case like that, Adobe wins.
Part of me suspects that's why Adobe's not terribly aggressive about locking up their software. I've got Photoshop, Premiere, and After Effects and none of them are dongle or registration code laden. Just serial #.
Hmm I'm off topic, but that's an aspect of 'piracy' that never seems to come up. Then again, it's an unusual case.

Their karma here will always be good as long as they use Moozilla.
"Nintendo (until recently?) has always taken a stand to produce kid friendly games (aka no adult games).."
Your statement is almost correct, but not quite. There was a time where Nintendo was very strict about the content of its games. Mortal Kombat, for example, had the blood changed to white to indicate "sweat flying off of somebody when they're hit". A lot of people complained about this, so Nintendo lightened up. In MKII the blood was allowed. Nintendo never seems to get credit for this.
Adult only? No. Nintendo themselves may not do the primarily adult oriented game (no Grand Theft Mario coming out any time soon), but they are nowhere near as restrictive with their 3rd parties as they used to be back in the SNES days.
In some ways, it kind of sucks. However, given some of the games that are available today (Resident Evil comes to mind) I'd say they're not being unreasonably restrictive. I would give them credit, though, for maintaining the side that may very well keep Liberman off the video game industry's back.
I'm sick and tired of GTA getting this flack because of its subject matter. It's a gangster game. It's also a simulation. Most of the violence the game is condemned for is the choice of the player, not the goal of the game. You can beat both GTA3 and Vice City without "beating a granny to death".
Let me tell you all something. I played a game on the Playstation once that was a racing game. You could race through cities. (I'm sorry, the name escapes me.) There are bystanders in the street. What happens when you try to mow them down? They magically jump back (not very realistically mind you, happens way too quick) and clear the car so they never get hurt. So what happens? You know you can't hurt them. You know your car won't slow down. You just keep driving right through them. Is this really better than what happens in GTA 3? At least in GTA's case, when you hit pedestrians, the police start chasing you. When the police start chasing you, the goal of the game gets monumentally harder. So what's the result? You avoid pedestrians like the plague! So tell me, when your reflexes are trained to avoid hitting people, how exactly is this something to condemn? The non-violent game creates a worse situation!
One other thing I'd like to point out that is rarely mentioned in these negative GTA articles is that the game has a number of proper elements to its appeal. Running people over or baiting pigs is a cheap laugh, it's not what the game is about. This is the type of information that one learns after actually playing the game instead of watching the 10 second clip.
I had no idea this type of story could make it to Slashdot. I'm going to start submitting the comments I see in the various articles now! Front page, HERE I COME!
" but for some reason it never had that "must see the next episode now" magic. "
For me it was because Fox kept pre-empting it for football. That and the 7pm time-slot was actually kind of hard to catch. Simpsons had me programmed to be ready at 8. Man I was addicted to that show when it was on right after the Simpsons.
What really bugged me was that they showed Star Wars one Sunday at 5pm. Futurama would normally have been on at 7pm, following Star Wars. Seems like a pretty damn good lineup, dontcha think? Nope. We got two eps of King of the Hill that day.
I can understand that Futurama didn't do it for ya, but I feel rather strongly that Fox really blew it when it came to giving Futurama a chance to develop a strong audience.
"You think you're bothered? My name's Katherine!"
Ha! You've been promoted to bitch!
"Every company that ever deals with MS gets shafted..."
Everybody who generalizes sucks.
" First off, nVidia has better drivers. This is important."
Yeah because every GameCube owner is complaining about ATI's contribution to that machine.

Anybody else picture carbon copy-esque remakes of Star Wars with great effects but no acting?

The topic is about supercomputers, this post is about supercomputers, and it's marked offtopic. Which of these three doesn't belong?
Is it Slashdotted or MSBlastered?
"I'd go so far as to say that putting mission critical hospital systems on the Windows 2000 platform is criminal."
And the alternatives are better? Doesn't matter which system you're on, you have to stay up to date with this stuff.
"Some of the alternatives are significantly more usable than Linux on the desktop. Yet we find people here posing it like it's an either/or choice."
Worse, sometimes it's not a choice at all. There are some things the alternatives can't do today. (Granted, this issue is drastically declining.)

That'd be a really cruel thing to do to the gamers!
Efficeon sounds like an Autobot that transforms into a flourescent bulb.

Bullshit. Hillary Rosen responded to one of my messages once.

I submitted this story earlier. Mine had a catchier headline: "Bender is dead!"
"fox can bite my shiny metal ass "
To everybody who saw this episode, this particular comment is especially funny.
