We always ask questions and ponder why Linux isn't more prevalent on the desktop. I think this post and thread is a perfect example of why it isn't.

Look at all the fuss over gcc 3.1 not being compatible with Java, other software packages and even 3.2 that is suppose to be out soon. The average user doesn't want to have to deal with that.

I myself have used Mandrake for about 3 years now and love it, and will buy the retail package when it comes out in stores. But I don't expect my 70 something year old grandfather to deal with gcc version compatibility when all he wants to do is email and look up stuff he watched on Discovery or The History Channel.

I know he's said he's waiting for all 3 new movies to come out before the original's are available on DVD but this just kinda sucks.

Ep 2 will be available on DVD by itself, then Ep 3. Then he will release all 3 as a box set with special commemorative features. Then the first 3 will be released individually, then as a box set suped up with special features for them. Then he'll release a massive box set with all the special features plus some.

If something like this happens which I'm sure it will, the fans would have spent somewhere close to...well I don't know how much, but a hell of a lot...for all of it if you want to see the extra stuff.

The good thing about Linux is if you are a programmer and there's a problem with Linux then a person can fix it. 18. Business vs. Bad Business on Microsoft Urged Linux Retaliation · · Score: 2, Insightful

This case is a frequent topic of debate for me and my right wing uncle. He's of the opinion that Microsoft should be at the top not only for making a supposedly better product but for their business dealings. He sees everything their doing completely legitimate for business standards.

What I can't get him to understand though is I don't consider Microsoft doing business. Isn't the point of a free economy to stimulate innovation and make sure the best product is the one being produced? I know the current business ethics aren't what my (or maybe most people's) idea should be, but does that mean we should cooperate with the status quo?

Business isn't making an inferior product then letting strong arming or legislation protect your market share, or in this case monopoly.

It's so obvious and just not to the /. crowd but maybe to the general public that MS is strong arming the computer industry. It just seems that's everyday business and good business to them.

I wish companies would price printers at a reasonable rate, and charge as low a price as possible on replacement ink cartidges as a way of guaranteeing that customers keep using the product instead of switching to another brand.

I wish that was the thinking of the companies but their money comes from cartridges not printers. I use a Canon and find it very convenient how Canon breaks up the ink refills by color.

When some family members needed ink refills for their HP I just had them go to Wal-Mart and get a 600 series HP for $40.00 instead of getting a black cartridge for $40, then color for $40. So much cheaper just to keep buying printers rather than cartridges.

Printers would start taking up a lot of space around the house, although you could always sell the printer on Ebay to finance the next one.
