"It's the curse of the early adopter. We were among the earliest to go whole-hog into telecommunications, especially in the urban centers, then spent a fortune bringing it to the rural areas, and we have been coasting along on legacy infrastructure for a long time now while other countries have been building more modern networks from scratch."
Like we didn't have dial-up here in France.. Well, we still have it (regular phone anyone ?)
- Sogudi allows to do almost the same thing with safari, though it is a bit different. For example:
goo monkeys : will search google for monkeys goo site:monkeys : will search the current site on google for monkeys babfr www.yahoo.fr : will translate yahoo.fr from French to English using babelfish, etc.
All of this configurable, of course.
- Acid Search enhances the Safari's google search button, by adding a drop menu, so you can have more search engines, including Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" feature.
Well, assuming you installed Debian correctly, it should only take as long as you need to show her "apt-cache search" and "apt-get ". apt is configured during the installation, and is actually very simple then. Feed in the CDs, choose some servers from the lists provided, and away you go.
But installing Debian and configuring the network is way too much for my mom, yet.

Well, we don't have these in Europe. You can only send like 3 SMS a day, and extra SMS cost around 0.1 USD.
Are you really sure it is really unlimited?
It would only take a few lines codes to make a program that would send like 10 SMS a sec on random numbers.

We are just, like, you. Admit it.
"extra infastructure cost"
Sure, but aren't you suppoed to have "extra money" to build it, compared to a small country like France ?
"90% of Canadian citizens are condensed to areas that are within 200km of the American border"
Or you can just call it "the south of Canada"
As the article highlights it, we don't have this problem in France, but we have the exact same problem with cellphones.
We're talking about a BIG problem, and all I can see is +5 funny posts.
Thank you America.

Sure, but how many hours would it take my mom to get 'apt-get' working ?
She's fine this Mac OS X, though.
Well, this already happened to the Powermac G4 back in 1999, since it was considered as a "super computer".

Not at all. It's time to code good software. You can't even DoS with SMS since they are *not* free. -J
