    Remember who we're talking about.

These corporations are the ones who work children 80 hours a week in third world natations. They destroy the worlds life support systems for raw materials and land. They encourage the gain in distance between the rich and poor. They purchase politicians and use them to turn your own system against you. They outsource YOUR jobs to countries where they are free to abuse workers. They erode civil rights in the name of profit and control. They are the pinnacle of theivery, abuse, and gluttony.

Do they us movies and music? Does it matter? Do you really think that in the face of the actions they're guilty of that we should show any sort of compassion when one of them cries foul?

Would you cry out when a murder in jail complains when his smokes are stolen?

Actually, it's pretty clear. Distributing copyrighted material without the copyright holder's permission is illegal. Nothing murky about it. The sense that I seem to get from slashdot is people really, really want to share files, so they tell themselves there's nothing wrong with it.

    There's nothing wrong with it.

These multinational corporations have, for years, had a free ride on our backs, and the backs of the artists they exploit. They fix prices, pay crap to the bulk of their workers, and 90% of the time release low quality garbage.

After over a half century of this, they have contributed little more than twisting a fine capitalist society into a nightmare realm where business has more rights than the individual.

These mega corporations are using, abusing, and growing on the backs of the people without giving anything worthwhile back, and you expect me to feel bad for them? Fuck that. Downloading songs and movies off the p2p networks is not an excercise in cival disobedience, it's getting back what's owed to you.

And for all your IWIWAL (wish I were a lawyer), yes, it's illegal. Yes, it's breaking the law. But anyone with even a basic amount of political awareness knows that corporate laws are bought and sold like any other commodity. They not based on what is the more moral position. They are most certianly not worth the paper they are printed on.

This is something I've thought about before as well. The obvious conclusion that I came to is that all printed media is a dying breed. We're seeing it now with the industry decline in newspapers and comics. It would not shock me in the least to see the death of those two formats, and the novel/text book well on the way to joining them, in 10 years.

As soon as we see a good, cheap e-reader that's easy to use and has widespread connectivity to the Internet, printed media is in trouble.

You have to remember, however, that the sterotypical "computer nerd" (physically weak, poor cordination, etc.) is no longer the average tech graduate. Since the mid 90's, more and more "average" people have been getting into tech. While, yes, for some tech graduates trade might physically not be an option, it still is for a large number of them.

  17. Consider trade..? on Is The Software Industry Dead? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I'm not trying to troll.. I'm just telling a meandering little story..

I've always been good with computers. My dad has over 20 years in IT so I was always surrounded by technology.. it came naturally.

In high school, I was always being told by my teachers, family, and friends that I should get into tech. The Internet boom was in full effect, and that's where the money was. But I knew, just knew, that it was not what I wanted to do for a living.

While my passion for software and computers was strong, I watched my dad come home day after day, looking miserable. He was working in upper management in the IT department of the municipality, overseeing day to day IT operations of the entire city. He dealt, on a daily basis, with nothing but grief. Morons who wanted the impossible, end users who didn't know their ass from their floppy drive, and miles of red tape that is omnipresent in the beurocratic mess that is government operations. Yes, he made great money, but he was NEVER happy.

So, watching this, I ignored the advice of everyone and hopped right into trade. I'm in a field that's very rare, and the people who can do it are even rarer. I'm 23, no post-secondary education, and in a few years I'll be earning more than most IT professionals. My friends who went to school for tech degrees now have huge student loans to pay off, and not one is working in the tech industry. They now are cooks, factory workers, in retail sales, and one is even an assistant manager at a fast food joint.

I'm glad I dodged the tech bullet. I'm glad I didn't turn my beloved hobby into a hated profession. I've found a field where the work is hands on and satisfying, and when I come home.. I can sit down at my PC without cringing.

My point - if you're out of school with a degree that you're finding useless.. consider getting into a trade. You earn decent wages while you train, and the money only gets better. Due to everyone going into tech, new recruits in the trades are few and far between. As the boomers retire, skilled tradesmen are going to be in high demand, so wages could stand to increase even more. You get paid by the hour, so you don't have to work about crunching code 16 hours straight, and not seeing any gravy for the work due to your salary.

Just an idea.. and it beats the hell out of managing at McDonalds to pay off those loans.. =P
