I bike to work (about 45 minutes each way), usually go to the gym for about an hour during the day, eat well, don't eat crap between meals and drink nothing but water - and I am still a lardass.

I wasn't saying that I am, nor that he did. Just pointing out that there are those of us who need this feature of X much more than speed.

In reality, though, to a great many linux users, it's a neat trick that you don't necessairly NEED.
(glancing down at my taskbar with the 17 or so remote X sessions) Yeah, you don't really need anything except food and shelter, but this is one thing I won't give up without hurting people.
(of course they are all on servers where there is no rush - or any reason at all - to replace X, so it's not really relevant to the discussion at hand)
Well as far as sweeping, unfounded generalizations go, that's pretty well done. Have you considered that they put people in space? Like, in ships that escape earth's gravitation going several dozen times the speed of sound? With two significant accidents in 20-odd years. Seriously, if you can only come up with 4 examples since '86, I'd love to see someone with a better track record.
And I don't really see how you lose anything here, prototype or not; you'd have to contribute something to this before you can lose it (and sorry, tax money doesn't count - it stops being your money when the government takes it, and it's not like you have any real say over where it goes - that's kinda the point)
WTF? That's like saying that this years new sport car models are great, but there are still many places in the world that don't have roads, so the engineers should be paving them instead of designing cars.
These people do video chat software, codecs and networking are all great, but not everybody has to be doing that. Besides, there is plenty of broadband to go around, just because everyone doesn't have it doesn't mean those that shouldn't be able to take advantage of it. (seriously, how many things are there that everyone has?)
I wouldn't call them "shitty", but you are right, storywise these works aren't really any less dull (can't speak for Cryptnomicon, haven't read it); but then no one really said that the story was the selling point there.
From what I remember of the seattlement, MS would really have to go out of their way to not comply with the terms - I mean, it's hard enough just finding something they are required to do, in there.
It's a phone without the phone part. Are they actually suggesting one should use this for typing on their PC? I was under the impression that phone keypads were what you had to settle for on the phone because you can't fit a normal keyboard on there.
Seems the only point of all these new great innovations in keyboard technologies is to be "different", none of them seem to be even remotely useful. (Except that keyboard with breasts, that thing was just plain ingenious)
It lets you mix html and code in. Sure, it's not the only language that lets you do it, but it's still a strength.
How on earth is this a strength? This "feature" is probably single handedly responsible for a significant portion of the absolute crap webapp code out there.
Seriously why would you ever, ever want to mix your code with HTML? That's just so 1990's...
self-involved narration of what people do every day (i.e., generally called "quitting") is worthy of Slashdot headlines?
I am always curious about statements like this - what exactly, in your opinion is "worthy" of a slashdot headline?
Whenever you start associating words like "worth" with/.'s content, just repeat this simple phrase: "blog for geeks, blog for geeks, blog for geeks..." it should help put things in perspective.
Guess they took my advice on the cheapshots, now if they just toned down the prose a bit.

400 GHz / (300 * 8) = 0.167 GHz, or in other words 166MHz processors? Seems a little odd, I didn't even know they had machines that can do 8 way SMP and have processors that slow.
Seems that whatever those boxen are a dually commodity box would be comparable and much cheaper...
What, so they wouldn't, for example, accept a question about whether or not he's been tempted to use his skills in a negative manner?
So you think that question should've been accepted twice?
Immediately you must ask what else he's used his m4d ski11z for.
Must I? I personally don't care in the least, that's just me of course, but I am sure I am not alone here; just because some people seem obsessed with digging up every single minor transgression a person could'be made (what did he do really? posted a few screenshots to embarras the guy? shocking!), but it's just not all that interesting.
Um, maybe because it has nothing to do with security? The incident itself makes for a great read, but that info is already available, I really don't see why you would want him to waste space (and his time) talking about his morals and ethics - I was under the impression that the interview was about network security and associated tools.
Since they were talking about "start" I suppose Theo de Raadt should be on the list instead of OpenBSD... Come to think of it, he is a "security guy" I've heard a lot about even though I don't have much dealings in the particular field.

I think your are missing the point - it's not microsoft that would be after your SS and CC info.
a) Why?
b) Who exactly are you to proclaim what Linux should or shouldn't be used for?
Um... It's called the Internet?
Actually, here's a good module that talks about PERL - very useful for Perl programmers.
WTF is "PERL" anyway? PHP sucks, Perl rules.

What's Linux got to do with anything? I thought the article was about iChat. Could you please keep you anti-Linux elitism out of this?

You do realize that for research that requires human cells tissue from foreskin is often used? I guess it's just widely available.
Yeah, but they seem to like capitalism more than communism in this country...

I'd have to say I am not the only one to immediately think of a pair of "surrugate" breasts when looking at this thing... interesting design decision.
