  1. Option #3!!! on Extra Scenes in FotR Special Edition DVD · · Score: 2

i disagree...i like option #3...under option #4, i have to buy 2 seperate packages to get everything...the "regular" release should be a sub-set of the "special" release...if you use option #3, there should be no bitching as long as you know *ahead of time* (as we do here) that there will be a regular and a special edition...that way, the people who just want the movie and aren't hard-core fans can just buy the regular theatrical version...meanwhile, those who are hardcore fans, can buy the more costly special edition, and not miss anything from the regular release...the way new line is doing is with different bonus material over the two sets is nothing more then a way to make more money off the movie...cause they know hard-core fans want everything, and will probably buy both sets...

so, basically let's see, if i want *everything* from the entire series i'll probably have to buy FOTR regular, FOTR special edition, TT regular, TT special ed., ROTK regular, ROTK special ed., then probably a box set special edition of all 3 movies...i'll end up having like 25+ lord of the rings DVDs by the time i'm through...jeez, that's out of hand...i'll need a special storage unit just for them..

atleast that's one thing Lucas is doing right with the original star wars trilogy...he could easily release eps 4,5,6 on DVD right now, just as they are...then re-release another DVD speical edition later...but instead they're gonna work on the DVD, and anything he wants to change, and any special feautres...that's the way to do it...not release version after version...

i thought this at first, but you'd have to think when they start showing the full length trailers, commercial spots, movie posters, etc, that Gandalf will be included in these...much less things like the lists of the cast, etc...that said, i would guess that the majority of people looking forward to the movie (and already downloaded the trailer) already know that gandalf comes back...

personally i had never read any of the books before i saw the first movie...since then, i've read "The Hobbit", "Fellowship of the Rings", and "The Two Towers"...i'm getting ready to move on to the 3rd of the trilogy...

"Please Note: The Two Towers is the title of the JRR Tolkien book originally published in 1954, the second book of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The title was thus established some 47 years prior to the attacks on the World Trade Center towers, and there is no evidence to suggest that Peter Jackson meant anything by continuing the same title other than faithfulness to the beloved Tolkien classics. Furthermore, the two distant, opposing towers in the Tolkien classic have very little if anything in common with the two matching towers of the World Trade Center. -- PetitionOnline.com"

also, i saw this after the story was posted last week...from theOneRing.net posted a frame by frame analysis of the trailer...it's pretty cool, and does a good job analyzing what's going on in the teaser trailer...contains major spoilers though, of course, that only matters if you've never read the book...

How it rounds depends on the value of the digit immediately to the right of the decimal place--digits less than 5 are rounded down, while digits greater than 5 are rounded up. If the digit is 5, then it's rounded down if the digit immediately to the left of the decimal place is even, and up if it's odd. When the digit to be rounded is a 5, the result is always an even integer." so, Ed is correct...the round function is working to the documentation...

i think what they're saying is that the trailer premiers on Entertainment tonight (whenever that is on for you)...on the east coast it's at 7:30 PM EDT, on the west coast 7:30 PM PDT...

also (and here's where the confusion is), the trailer will premier on the internet at 7:30 PM PDT...in other words, you can watch it at 7:30 (local time) on ET...or wait till 7:30 PDT to see it on the internet...obviously, they can't release it on the internet in conjunction with the 7:30 PM EDT showing on ET, because then everyone on the west coast would just download it, and that would ruin the premier on ET on the west coase...

well, anyway, that's the way i understood it from their web site...

wow, compared to the SW:II "breathing" teaser, this LOTR:TT teaser was chock full of info...not to mention that it gives away the spoiler that Gandalf returns in the second movie...granted that's not a spoiler for me, or for many (who've read the book), but for others it might be....

all and all though, it looks awesome, and the huge battle scenes look great...as with FOTR which was a much better movie then PM, it already looks like TT will be a better move then AOTC (just from the teaser)...then again, it's kinda like comparing apples to oranges...sure, AOTC had a huge universe to draw from, by TT has a greate piece of literature behind it with a strong story...not just Lucas making it up as he goes a long...(note: that was not a star wars flame...i'm a huge star wars fan)...

recently i watched a PBS (i think) special on the Robocup...must've been from 2001, if the 2002 one is going on right now...it was hosted by Alan Alda...anyway, it was really interesting...

some of the things the teams could do were amazing...while most teams basically used "brute force" to push the ball into the net, there were some advanced teams that could actually recognize teammates and pass the ball to them...that was pretty impressive...the had kind of a pinball type flipper kinda thing that would poke out near their feet...

another cool thing was that some of the robots (i think it was the same team that could do the advanced passing) could actually "trap" the ball...they had a spinning bar on their front, so as the ball came to them, the bar would spin, and they could keep control of it, by basically continually spinnning the ball towards themselves...kinda like a tread mill...

another progressive idea (and i'm sure the slashdot/open source community will appreciate this) was that after the competition is over, all of the teams are required to share their source code, so everyone starts on the same plane for the next year of research... it's really a cool speical if you can catch it while you're flipping the channels sometime....

i have mixed feelings about this...

Sun says will save it $150 million annually, and the program is essentially an advertisement for the company's marketing pitch that business runs better on a network of big computers than smaller boxes powered by software from rival Microsoft Corp.
i like this idea very much, both because it saves the company money and is a much better (as they said) then every employee having their own stuff on their own personal computers...this way employees can get information from other employees much easier...i mean, you ever run into the problem when Employee X is out one day, but has some data that you need on his laptop that isn't at work...that kinda thing would be eliminated by this "floating" network workspace initiative... now, to play devil's advocate...

The lack of personality at Sun, however, was troubling to Martin Bechtold, Assistant Professor of Design Technology at the Harvard Design School, who said he believed people needed the chance to personalize their offices -- even if he did not have studies to prove so one way or another.
this is the bad side of the idea to me...at my desk at work, i have several assorted programming books, pictures of friends and family, my walkman, a dilber calendar, a rubik's cube, etc...with this kind of floating workspace, that kind of personal touch to your office would be eliminated...

plus, what if i wanted to go visit Employee X in person? i guess i would have to call them first, to find out where they are on any given day...also might make "stopping by" the desk of any female employees to try in vain to flirt a little more difficult...
