Gentoo's growth could be a sign that Linux is going to remain in the ghetto of tinkerers and enthusiasts.:-(
I don't see how you can comapre the realm of tinkerers and enthusuasts to a ghetto. I also don't see why Gentoo's success should be seen as something negative for the Linux community.
Gentoo is gaining popularity IMHO because of:
Friendly community - In my spare time I usually hang out in the #gentoo #gentoo-amd64 and #gentoo-ppc irc rooms on freenode.net. Everyone goes out of their way to help. The "elitist" ideology isn't seen too often. The Gentoo forums are the same way.
Strong sense of community. Gentoo user are very welcoming.
Running Gentoo is like going to your car dealership and having the option of getting the same car pre-built or in a kit form for you to tweak and customize as you go. And no matter what form you get the dealer throws a bunch of high performance parts in the trunk for you to put on yourself at some point if you so choose.
Portage just works. Never had any problems with it and I run Gentoo on an Intel box, a AMD64 box and on a iBook
I really think it is taking off because people who use it usually have nothing but good things to say about it, portage, and don't have to use precompiled binaries if you do not want to.
Granny may not be able to build it but like others have mentioned you can fix that with an "purdy" installer and have it do a stage three install and genkernel. Genkernel is the only part of Gentoo that sucks but it is a necessary evil for those that need it. I don't touch it.
The new $80 Radio Shack 8-in-1 Kameleon is the first universal remote control to include a finder feature. If the remote disappears, a user could press a button on a separate finder device for up to 14 seconds to make the remote control beep loudly.
No it isn't. I had a "4 in one" brand remote in 1996ish that had a locator remote that when pressed would cause the universal remote to beep so you could find it.
Yes and when SCO becomes a penny stock I shall buy all of it with the money I am saving by using open source products then "All your *nix are belong to me!" Well, I might get two lines of code. But it will be mine, ALL MINE! Mwuahaha
Now that Oracle is on board I am starting to wonder... Wonder if 30 years from now we are going to look back and wish for the early days of Linux.
What if a company like Oracle (whom I hardly trust) uses our own savior of operating systems against us, to maybe enslave us all. Not literally of course but maybe you know where I am going.
All the while, Bill sits in his pile of money while laughing at us for what the world as become and what we did to create it.
I am not trolling. I love Linux but the bandwagon is getting full.
Sorry bout the formatting. Forgot to hit preview but the data is there.

This questions gets posted but my story about Penny Arcade trying to get people to buy toys for the Seattle Children's Hospital does not. WTF is going on here. Stupid questions about fundamental retail policies or helping sick kids (some of whom will die before they ever become a teenager). Hey stupid retail question wins!!!!
When you get a PD you may get a private attorney that is doing pro-bono work. I think most state BAR's require any member of the BAR to do X number of pro-bono cases.
How much it this really going to cost you? Besides if it isnt this channel it will be another one. Your rates may increase with or without this channel.
I work for BellSouth and I am suprised SBC has taken this stance. I know that BellSouth HAD an issue with Linux posted on Slashdot two years ago but I know of no issue where someone using Linux had a problem of late. Granted, I am sure most of the help desk people would be turned off by any mention of Linux (Should Linux users really need to call the help desks?). As a company policy however, we don't care. As a matter of fact a lot of the NOC/NSO employees run some type of *nix at home and have all kinds of NATed networks running from there DSL connections.
Damn I thought the same thing. I let out this big "hell yea!" at work. Co-worker came over to find out what I was so excited about and I proceeded to tell him how great Parsec on the TI99/4a was. Then I clicked the link... fooey..
nice to see the 500 bucks i spent on the IPAQ 3835 a few months ago wasn't a total waste. Oh wait, i use it about once a week to play Quake I and ssh into my network using 802.11b for ten minutes and then put it away. Yeah maybe it was.
DSL is actually old technology. It was created back in the late 80's for interactive TV. That idea never took off so it was placed on the shelf until one day it was given a second chance and became DSL.
No, NL's Vegas Vacation sucked. The three before it are great.
Plus it has a terminal client that supports ssh. Nothing like checking your server logs while waiting in line at the local Burger King.

Unless I have been asleep for 30 years and Bill "Microsoft" Gates III is now 78 years old Willam H. Gates II would be his dad.
My Sidekick has a SIM card and I live in the US. You sir, are a twit.
This aircraft appears to have the ability needed to do this based on this info found on this website: Rivet-Joint
I know this is old but, hell ya! Mr. manic depressive is gone!

You're my boy Blue!
From Old School for those of you playing at home.
Overall, i think Mandrake 9.2 is the easiest, yet most powerful Linux distro yet. Gentoo is my vote here.

Cable companies are not democracies. It is a PRIVATE service that is not funded by the government. Maybe you are thinking of the BBC?

Why is this news?
