  2. I have a cracked iPhone! on Apple Says iPhone Jailbreaking Could Hurt Cell Towers · · Score: 1

  3. Re:Wrox Press on Java, Where To Start? · · Score: 2, Informative

I would skip the Ivor Horton book. I bought it when I first started to learn Java and found it woefully slow placed. Over the course of the tomb you develop a fairly basic app along the lines of C++ and not Java (overly simplified OO design etc). The best stuff out there is actually free. Don't buy the official Java language books because they are usually out of date (we have them in the office collecting dust). To learn the basic core language I'd recommend the Java tutorial and for reference the API JavaDocs. Also forget about Swing and Hibernate until you understand the basic language. http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api John

  5. Labours big fat cash injection on UK Schools At Risk of Microsoft Lock-In · · Score: 1

Under the current Labour government they don't care whether schools get locked-in, only whether Microsoft is willing to give them a large amount of money to fund their expected shortfalls in investment into IT for education.

Microsoft have always made it clear what there agenda is: complete market domination. However, governments are quite easily bought.

  8. Pay and IT on The Forgotten Apple CEO · · Score: 2, Informative

I think the IT industry must be unique in the way that they are always late paying their staff yet most companies have the know-how to knock-up and el-cheapo payroll system. All the IT jobs I've worked in are late payers and have to be frequently reminded that the money they are spending on luxeries and lunches is actually my salary. Is anyone here in the IT industry (particulary programming) and paid on-time?

  11. They all look the same on E3 Grows Up - A Little · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Maybe its just me, but I haven't been excited by any game for years. They all look the same, are too short and have more emphasis on graphics than gameplay. Maybe at 24 I'm just too old for games. But do we really need another Quake/Doom/etc??

We are still very early in the design and implementation process...
This bothers me. They are already implementing an unfinished design - isn't this called "hacking"? I think we have enough amateurish bloatware, it seems eveyone wants to make another mail client, another web browser - why can't they either fix what's out there or make something new... I have nothing against hacking, but there deluding themselves thinking they have designed a "new" application.
  22. consoles are easier to work with... on PCs Losing Out as a Gaming Platform? · · Score: 1

Until you can program for one API and have guaranteed reliabilty that device X supports feature Y then consoles will always rule. It's a lot of wasted effort to implement cutting edge effects and find that it isn't supported on another piece of hardware (i.e. Open GL extensions, EAX).

Programmers want the easy route. Write it once and make money... PC's are fragmented because all the companies are competing.

That logo is just begging for a little s in the middle of that white circle. That would make the big cut circle look like the 'O' and coupled with the 'S' I mentioned, plus the white intersection which looks like an 'I' - which would spell 'OSI', how novel! :)

  25. Well not entirely on Linus Retiring from Kernel Dev · · Score: 1

Linus had said that he's moving back to the 1.0 branch and letting CowboyNeal take over the main development branch. Bill Gates is taking up the 2.2 branch and is adding some -bg patches to add those all important crashes that our operating system is lacking compared to Windows. And Alan Cox is buying out AOL/Time Warner and canning the LOTR sequels and Harry Potter 2 because they didn't make enough money.
