U.S.-based Web search engines have also felt pressure from the Chinese government. China blocked Google for several weeks in August and blocked AltaVista in September. Web portal Yahoo has defended its decision to sign an agreement to comply with regulations requiring the monitoring and restriction of "harmful" information. Yahoo said it signed the agreement out of compliance with local laws, adding it would not sign any laws that extend beyond current limits of censorship.
So, except for MS, Sun, etc. are the search engines also breaking the law?
To never keep back-ups in the same physical location.
The university made full backups this weekend and the building where the backups are is approximately 3km away from the Computer Centre that burned down.
In fact: this 'backup' building used to be one from the Dutch Bank (say the Federal Bank in the US) and the backups are also stored in the original (giant) safe !

Funny,
If you search for "william shatner" "wil wheaton" in google, the first hit is... indeed the WWDN T-shirt!
Can Wil send CmdrTaco a T-shirt so he can pass it on to Shatner during the interview?
I would really like to have mozilla work with evolution somewhat better. Any tips out there for it?

By right-clicking on an image, you can select "block images from this server" and further images will not be loaded from this site, saving you annoying advertisements and download-times.
I managed to replace the slashdot advertisements inside a story with blank space, but removing the top-banner page will also remove all your other slashdot graphics. Maybe phoenix can include a feature that blocks images from a URL containing the text "adlog.pl" ?
I believe France already has a 70-year copyright law, while a lot of other countries (like Holland) have 50-years copyright law. So like most laws in Europe, the most stringent law survives.
UT2003 is a 3 CD set. Of course you know it's a huge game with a ton of content (over 35 levels), great characters, awesome gametypes, incredible AI, cool mutators, etc. But there's also some great tools including the following:
(...)
2. The Karma Authoring Tool (KAT) that allows you to set up character joint constraints for use with MathEngine's Karma real-time physics system which is incorporated into UT2003.
(...)
It already costs me a day-job just to keep my slashdot-Karma positive, I think I'll give up op Unreal tournament for now....
...to finally spent my billion dollars, see
this story.
Now I know how I want to illuminate my garden!
Making antiprotons requires 10 billion times more energy than it produces. For example, the antimatter produced each year at Cern could power a 100 watt light bulb for just 15 minutes.

We've posted a couple of previous stories about Dobelle and his work on bionic eyes, but this one has more details: one frame per second, $100,000
Do you think this $100,000 for 1 frame/second is too much? There might be quite some blind guys in the world who would like to pay this to see just one frame in their entire life...
It will not take too long before someone will make a 'e-bay' or MSN gateway or mirror via another site if these are blocked from an ISP.
On the other hand, MSN or e-bay can also do the opposing: any traffic coming from this service provider will be blocked unless the service provider pays for the 'content'. If everybody does this for this service provider...
Pretty expensive volve car to drive... How long will one Windows 98 license take you? Hmmm, I think I still prefer my car to run ongas instead of Win98...
There is another point where Orwell failed in this description of the future: His book became a bestseller and partly because of that every reader in the past 54 years became aware of the dangers of technology control by governments.
You are absolutely right, but I think these 'problem' cases are marginally compared to the cases where microsoft software is used in another way than allowed by their license, for instance by installing it on more than one system.
Sharing code is inherent in using GPL, like not installing microsoft software on more than one system.
Having a 'good' trainer is cheating, because it's an external aid
Using vitamines is cheating, it's external
Eating pasta is cheating

If you look at top-sport, everyone is trying new methods, technology to improve performance. Most of the times it works temporarily: until the next Olympic games. After that, competitors copy the methods and the race starts over again. Look at swimming (new swim-suits), speed-skating (clap-skates or how you call them in English), etc.
I think it will become dope if it's harmful for the sporters themselves: it would mean that other sporters must copy this harmful technique to stay competitive.
The EU has a large budget on their own, of course paid by all member states. So, if they decide to make an "open source software pool", the EU as a whole will probably donate money for it.
A lot of EU money is spent on letting EU members work together in european projects. Open source is an excellent way to cooperate internationally. Even if it's just for drowning...
