Eckel's books are pretty good. The books don't bother trying to be a language reference or "for dummies" books. Thinking in Java is very easy to read and follow but yes, having some background in another language helps to understand this book. I taught myself Java in about two weeks just reading through the chapters and trying to solve some of the problems at the end of each one. I learned much more from this book than any coarse I had in Java in college.
