This is not a personal attack; that's why I'm posting as me, and not as an AC. I, too, have read Battlefield Earth, and I cannot, for the life of me, see this book as anything but Science psychofantasy. Compare Hubbard, if you dare, to Asimov, Bradbury, or Heinlein: the differentiation of underlying literary focus is staggering. The three good men whom I mention as counterpoint to Hubbard all used SF as a device to further their plots; Hubbard used it as a way to describe Scientology without giving away information he wanted people to PAY for. Automagical dissemination of information to mentally-challanged humans was the closest thing Hubbard had (well, that and the telepotation... ) to science, and supposedly this information feeder caused Johnny Two-Guns to become John Rambo, John Wayne, and George Washington combined, as well as some Chuck Yeager, Issac Asimov, and L. Ron Hubbard. I am not being snobbish or elitist. I just cannot classify Battlefield Earth as anything more than a poorly written introduction to the precepts and concepts of Scientology. You are correct in stating that there is no OVERT mention of Scientology, but if you created a skeletal outline of the development of Johnny and the concepts he grows to have, you would probably have a document that would be similar to a "Begginer's Guide to Scientology". Again, I'm posting as myself to establish my points as non-troll. I hope that you take them in that fashion.
Just imagine; I am on the phone, a call comes in, and it's Natalie Portman!!!!! Now, if they could just develop a way to teleport hot grits into my pants during this...
These questions have a HUGE slant to them! They are not neutral nor are they informative. It seems that most of them are accusatory toward the President, and are 'softball' questions for the Democratic candidate. The questions come from a stance of supostion and assumption. Look at the Education (Sex Ed.) question; it is so biased that it was the straw that caused me to terminate my voting for the moderated questions. People are going to seriously ask these questions and expect an answer that they are open to? These questions are leading and closed. Why do I even bother reading the politics.slashdot section any longer?
Wasn't his editorial written concerning how Microsoft should be pouring money into cleaning up the 'spaghetti code' that he claims runs amok in Redmond? Granted, I skimmed through the article awaiting my father's recovery from retinal surgery, but I really do not remember any in-depth discussion of the Xbox. I hope his editorial is seen as a call for a new management paradigm, and not just another voice calling for the solution of a problem by more spending. That would make some investors a wee bit nervous, don't you think?
This is a work of love - no doubt about it. The mouse looks as though it would sand off your fingerprints after about three rounds, though. But it is an impressive case mod, make no mistake of that. I feel sorry for his web page -lots of pictures...
I've experienced normal service today. In fact, I received an email as I read this very piece! I am in Arkansas though, so it may be a regional issue. Best of luck to you! At least your spam influx has ceased...
Are the properties of the whale fins a result of the bumps and nodules? Do the nodules and bumps flex when subjected to the pressures of the fluids? If so, how would you replicate this in a man-made material? What composition would be required to have parts of the foil flex or compress/decompress to provide the results that a whale fin/fluke does?
Just out of curiousity, are the bumps and nodes alluded to in the article made of flesh? Isn't flesh compressable? Would this not have an effect upon the properties of the foil in question? I think it would be difficult to replicate these qualities. but I am not an aeronautical engineer, nor am I a rocket scientist. I'm only a humble chemist.
Imagine the 5th generation of iPods with this capability. One could set up their iPod as the default music server in the car, walk in their home, change settings from inside the home, and drive off with no need to remove their iPod! This is the solution I have been seeking! The future is here, and although it lacks flying cars, I AM IN IT!!! T3H FUTUR3!!1!!!!
This type of incorrect usage of the word censorship bothers me. The GOVERNMENT censors people. Individuals and corporations, by definition, cannot bring censorship onto something. If a company changes its product in response to critisicm by a potential market, that's called refining the product. If you want to state that a comapny has the right to manufacture its product the way it sees fit, you are 100% correct (excepting government regualtions and rules). But, if the changes would increase their market share, then the company is more likely to do it. This story is only getting any traction on/. because "There are well organized forces that work hard to punish software makers and sellers for what they consider religious transgressions".
Thank you for the succinct and non-belligerent reply. I wish there were more people who could clearly express the thoughts of the Conservatives/Libertarians without resorting to name-calling. Your post was a Burmese tiger trap, and I loved it. Again, thank you.
I used Google to translate the text, and nowhere is a mention of loss of mass mentioned. Given that these are small materials to begin with, how much mass is consumed in this process? The pics show pieces that are not snug. Just a thought...
I have this EXACT problem with my 1st generation iPod. There is a hard plastic collar around the jack, and after three months of pocket-related stress, the jack began to hiss and the left channel began to fade in and out. I KNOW Apple did not forsee this design flaw in the first gereation. I have not had the pleasure of usiong the second or third generations to compare. I simply mess with the plug until the music returns. Too bad there is not a Firewire headphone. That would be kick ass!
Could I get this and have it work on my PC? Having the two extra USB plugs, as well as the 'wet' look of the keyboard would be sweet! I'm serious! I want one for my PC! Is it 'Plug and Play' compatible?
This is THE Holy Grail, until someone builds an EVA.... God, how I am glad I am entering the job market this year! All that cash, burning a hole in my pocket! Where do I sign for one?
Five words and one number:
Grand Theft Auto III: Vice City
I play that game for time wasting, just because I can change my audio streams at a whim. Perrhaps audio location should not be as big an issue as how the user can inteact with it. Granted, I don't forsee being able to manipulate your virtual iPod in any Splinter Cell games soon, but I would hope that a major MMO gives the players audio streams for the game. But that's just me.
My first thought was "Neat." My second thought was "Who in their right mind would connect their computer to a network FULL of strangers? What sort of viruses and trojans would they pick up?" Then I remembered that I am connected to the internet as well as everyone reading this...
Isn't this a perfect time for Google to announce such a common, easily identifible service as this than at this particular juncture? How better to prepare the investing world to sell this upcoming IPO to Main Street Techno-Neophyte Investors than to say that Google is expanding, and that they even have email services... Plus, think about those eyeballs that will be locked into those browser-based email pages, and all the ad space that comes with them. I am a cynic, but that's just me. I'll still sign up for the service!
I think that this product is a step toward what the majority of/.'s are seeking for portable audio devices. I am intruiged by this product, primarily for the wireless capabilities it possesses. I have been researching audio systems for my car which would allow me to wirelessly update my musical selections. I had looked at the CAJUN Car Audio Jukebox, but this device comes close as an option. I dream of finding a local merchant that makes custom Mini-ITX cases, and installs them in my vehicle inexpensively. But I will consider this, as an alternative to my dream car audio system.

Well, my alma mater charged each student a fee per credit hour that funded the student paper, in addition to advertising.

You and Lord Kano are correct. Thank you for your lucid comments.
