Look at the use cases for Vino, the proposed included VNC. Mark McLoughlin has done an excellent writeup.
If you follow GNOME development you'll notice the shift towards better integration into the other desktop applications. See: Evolution and GAIM speaking over evolution-data-server.
So....If I understand the article right, to make Fedora Core 2 good, you need to install packages, change some gettings for gnome, and adjust the sound properties?
As long you don't quit on the spatial mode Nautilus as quickly as the author you don't need to make any changes.
Personally, I always rearrange the GNOME panels from the default Red Hat/Fedora layout to the default GNOME layout (Applications, System menu on the top panel). But that's my preference, and certainly not something I should shake a stick at the Red Hat/Fedora guys.
Perhaps the author would enjoy reading The Spatial Way then debate the merits rather than pull a "my desktop doesn't look they way it used it, it must be broke".

like carving those "wake-up" notches into road sides, or more money into re-inforcing messages not to drive drunk, or more money for training to reduce recidivism in previous DUI convicts.
What makes you think insufficient funds are being spent on these measures?
OR HOW ABOUT THIS? How about putting some stalls on the bathroom doors in the rest stops at El Paso? No joke... they had open stalls last time I was there a year ago.
El Pase, where the stalls are open and the tourists are afraid.

Some truck stops in Texas already have WiFi access (though not free) via a service for truckers.
From my wardrive along the interstate it can be debated that there are enough hot spots already.
All joking aside I can't wait for there to be legitimate free APs.
I think a lot of folks would like to move to the server closet idea. The problem that I have ran into is that I can't get power into my apartment closet.
To get gaim working you will have to install from source as Ximians latest supported release is 0.63.
You must make sure that you have the Mozilla/Netscape SSL layer devel rpms installed. Fire up Red Carpet and grab mozilla-nspr-devel and mozilla-nss-devel.
This will get you connected using the MSN plugin and should hold you over until Ximian releases and official RPM. I have posted to the Ximian user mailing list asking for an official stance on the progress of this package.
Contextual marketing -- for example, ads on Google searches -- is gaining ground over non-contextual content, such as e-mail lists.
I've had a guy from ah-ha.com call me three days in a row wanting to sell me pop unders and large banners on search engines that wrap google's results with their advertising.
Just hung up on a telemarketer who was reading from her screen about 'being very impressed with my site' and would like to improve it's rankings.
I think he means that the main advantage of Red Hat is that you get pre-compiled packages that are maintained for you. Once you start regularly compiling and maintaining packages on your own, you aren't really gaining anything.
I think that depends on how many packages you'll want to run that aren't in the current distribution. There's always going to be something that isn't available that you'll need to install from source.
Exactly. I run RH Linux servers but chose to compile Apache as well as a few other programs.
Apache 1.x is so solid and does exactly what I need. I have no reason to upgrade. If RH wants to package Apache 2 thats fine. I don't need them to take care of all of my files.
I use RH because I don't want to worry about keeping tabs on if there is a new version [insert-system-binary-here].
Quote of the year IMHO:
"Microsoft's philosophy is to change our software every five years," Strobl (Munich council member Christine Strobl ) says. "With open-source, it is possible for us to make our own decision as to when to change our software."
We have all read hundreds of reviews of the latest software. Some are really interesting, others are combed through to get to the screen shots.
Note to reviewers:
If you are going to provide a thumbnail screenshot, then link to the larger image - at least make the larger image actual size, not another fuzzy scale-down.
Just because a module is included does not mean it's a requirement to use the desktop.
For example, Evolution has been proposed for inclusion in 2.8 but is easily removed.
The intregration push is to get to that point where you can hand somebody a desktop system and know that things "just work".

Mark's use cases answer your question.

This article includes references to educational linux software. Overall it's a great article.
You may also try looking at the Linux Journal topic Linux in Education.
In addition, there is a Knoppix remaster that's intended for schools.
