    Um.. No
The court ordered sharing of the IBM Principles Of Operation (POO) deal ran out in the early 00's. At this point HDS (who was phasing out the mainframe) and largely Amdahl could not afford to pay the price that IBM demanded for access to the POO. Amdahl had a 64 bit CPU up and running in development, and was getting ready to announce when this happened. That was it, Amdahl kept selling the 31 bit CPU for a few years, but it was over at that point.

Two weeks ago, leaving DFW for YYZ I spent 35 minutes in security. Sure, there were only 8 people in front, and the line didn't move forever because they kept kicking baggage and people back out to go through again.

Knowing I could save 5 seconds out of that 35 minutes really makes me want to spend $200 on a new laptop bag. Yes, one that I can't put much in as it needs to be zipper/pocket free on one side.

PC's have been around for over 25 years. Is that not old? They constantly evolve.

    Mainframes constantly evolve.

Mainframes went 64 bit before the PC ever did. Virtualisation is just gaining ground on the PC.

Mainframes have had that for decades with Domains and LPAR's.

Whats old technology, a PC server farm with dedicated server per app, and maybe 10 concurrent users, or a mainframe running many applications with thousands of users, and terrabytes of i/o throughput.
