It will be interesting how rails handles under the slashdot load.

I whipped up a google maps hack of geolocation of Illinois registered sex offenders: http://demon.dopeman.org/sexOffenders/ It was amazingly easy.

I used all of the tutorials and shit that the rancidbacon peeps created. made it rather simple. actually delightful.

now if i was only mapping locations of something cool.. rather than depressing things.

    stupid maps.

  3. scary on Google Launches Desktop Search Tool · · Score: 3, Insightful

i have been using this for the past 30 minutes at work. all the while my friends are messaging me, i am reading emails - and i am able to see the status of the number of indexed items grow with every chat i engage and with every email i read(not literally of course). What scares me is how instantaneous it indexes things. it would easily allow my boss to search and find the ONE conversation that breaks policy. This is really cool - but it strikes fear into my cold black heart.

i was poking around wiht the indexes a little
(located at C:\Documents and Settings\~username~\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Google Desktop Search\ in xp) and i really wasn't able to ascertain anything. haha. i just want to see how 'encrypted' the aim chats are. logs are scary at work. and searchable hidden logs are even scarier.

  5. I did this with a generic DAQ and VB on Building a Cheap Oscilloscope Using Your PC? · · Score: 1

I took an electronics class were we had to build and program a oscilliscope for one of the beginning prohjects. We had a generic DAQ and the api for C(dos) or VB(win). The prof only new VB so we were limited to that. The drivers and API for VB was pretty good, however it was quite slow when propagating sample rate changes and the like. However, it worked. If you are interested in the source code it is here(warning - it is VB and it is a quick hack). We were able to use it to "record" from a microphone and then "playback" the waveform we recorded. It was pretty cool.

really you should be able to use any analog-to-digital acquisition device. A sound card would work great. Program it using the sound cards low level API. Basically write a driver/program that parse hthe wave info and spits it out to the screen rather than the speaker. heh.

For probes, use a mic plug hooked to a male banana clip. that should allow you to use any breadboard/probe.

    heh.

Actually, you can purchase an audrey from a vendor and then go download a hacked rom image from audreyhacking.com. Dump the image onto a compact flash card, slot it into the audrey and wham, bam - a hacked audrey with all the coolest features. It really is very easy. check out this article for more info and success stories.

    BTW the audrey rules..

I was searching for mainly pictures, and i found the following:

http://pr.fujitsu.com/en/news/2001/09/10.html - a generic article with a picture. Discusses specs.

It looks like it will be rather expensive, they have set the price to "open" with a sales expectation of 100 over three years. It has 20 degrees of movement. It uses RTLinux(like the other article mentioned) and uses USB to act as the "Direct Interface and Robot's Internal Network." also, it mentions that HOAP-1 stands for Humanoid for Open Architecture Platform

Imagine - a small army. A cluster if you will. wouldn't that be "wyrd" :)

  14. What about the distribution of technology? on Interview: Ask Jon Katz Almost Anything · · Score: 1

It seemes that the technology industry is a field where a person is judged not by their color, income or sex, but by their technical skills and abilities; but the distribution of technology is a problem. It appears that technology is distributed in such a way that white suburbia has more of a chance at joining the technology industry than people of minority status.

With the influx of free(as in beer?) software and the explosion of the open source movement; it would seem that lower income(rural & urban) areas would have a greater potential for getting more computing power. The amount of hardware upgrades would seem to necessitate a steady supply of older machines that would be able to run Linux and open software at little cost.

But, it seems that this is not the case. The gap between technology and the low income areas of the U.S. is widening. How can we, as computer nerds, help to increase technology in affordable ways for the lower income areas. What do you as an outspoken member of the hacker community think of this paradox?
