  2. Can it compete with KDE? on Gnome 2.0 RC1 · · Score: 0, Flamebait

KDE seems to have matured really quickly from version 2 to version 3. I feel it the most productive desktop I have used on any system.

I always though of gnome as 'middle-level' (as in kde is 'high-level' and open/black box as 'low-level') and so the new flux of ex-Windows users never really notice it.

    Is Gnome2 gonna change this?

  3. It could be a flaw... on Open Source Limitations? · · Score: 1

The author is indeed correct as the current state of open source exists now it is flawed.

If you can imagine a world without M$ and its greediness then there is a possibiliy that open source could work, and work well.

The problems are the licences. The GPL is great for non-profit and 'hobby' applications but just won't work for products such as, say, photoshop.

A licence could be written that states people can contribute to the commercial application but code cannot be taken from it and used elsewere, if this licence was obeyed by the users open source would work for capital. The thing is it wouldn't; you would always have script kiddies branching from the original source tree and posting thier code on a 'warez' site meaning loss of valuable capital for the company.

I would really like open source to take off in such a way that even big commercial companies used it. I just don't think it will ever happen.

I bloody well care about it! When I went through an Urban Terror (mod for Q3) faze I had to use them for GL. They are the buggiest piece of crap ever written. They would play havoc with my console and mouse cursor in X. If I select text in Konq they would crash X completely meaning a reboot (unless I ssh'd in and killed it.) NVidia card are also shite for video just ask the MPlayer hackers (you won't be hard pushed to get an oppinion!)

I really like this attitude, I wish more companies would take it on. Most of all I'm hoping that educational establishments are going to snap it up. I may write a letter to the head of my computer and maths department suggesting the change. There is now no need for Office anymore.
